While RMA students work arduously in the classroom (most of the time), many students also work elsewhere. Whether it’s to earn extra money for personal use or just for fun, students enjoy working in various ways and places.

Many RMA students in upper school work at summer camps. Senior Jack Thorp has attended Camp Sea Gull for 7 years, worked as a leader in training for 1 year, has been a counselor for 1 year, and plans to work as a counselor next year. Needless to say, he loves the camp and all the responsibilities that come with his duty as a counselor. When asked about why he enjoys working at Sea Gull, he stated, “Recently, I had two campers contact me saying that I was the best counselor that they have ever had. I love being a counselor because of things like that. To make in impact on my campers’ lives just like former counselors have had an impact on mine is meaningful.” Like Jack, senior Katie Gutshall has been a camper at Camp Merri Mac for many years and now works as a counselor. Although Katie spends most of her time at camp rock climbing and kayaking, she enjoys hiking the most. This past summer, she hiked Grandfather Mountain for a week and camped. When asked about this experience, Katie stated, “Hiking for that long was difficult at times, but in retrospect, it was a great experience for me and helped me work as a team player.”

Both girls and boys work as babysitters throughout the year, senior Olivia Turnage has been babysitting since middle school. Olivia states, “I love working with kids, particularly those from RMA, because they remind me a lot of myself when I was their age. My favorite part would have to be their refreshing and hilarious honesty.” Like Olivia, senior Lucy Rose is a babysitter and also works at RMA’s After School Enrichment program (aka ASE). Lucy and Olivia both agree that working with kids is a fun way to earn money that also brightens your day.

Along with these jobs, many RMA upper schoolers work at Benvenue Country Club. Senior Samantha Sconyers, Olivia Turnage, Lindsey Ross, and Brendan Acker. Samantha and Olivia work down at the pool during the summer, while Lindsey can be found working in the Tennis Center busy selling apparel and cleaning the courts. Brendan Acker can be found chatting up members and cleaning carts at the golf course. If you’re ever around BCC, the chances of you seeing a fellow RMA student is highly likely.

There are many more hardworking students that aren’t mentioned in this article. Whether this diligence is shown through work that is paid or volunteer work, the willingness of RMA students to work is something that needs to be celebrated.
