Senior Spotlight: Gus Mcniff

Senior+Spotlight%3A+Gus+Mcniff

For one of our last senior spotlights, we focus on Gus Mcniff, one of the most unforgettable members of our senior class. Describing himself as dedicated, honest, and caring, Gus has left an indelible mark on our grade.

Gus McNiff and fellow senior Lainey Overton pose in front of Kensington Palace during a school trip (summer 2022).

Gus is working hard his senior year taking French 4, Ecology, English 12, Advanced Functions and Models, Ceramics, Criminal Justice, and Weightlifting. Showcasing his aptitude in academics, Gus has been awarded Academic Excellence in French 2 and 3, the Highest Academic Average in Marine Biology, and the Highest Academic Average in English 11. Outside of the classroom, he participates in the Global Studies Honors Program, Key Club, and Drama Club, and he volunteers with Gatekeepers Workcamp, Ripe Revival, and Animal Crackers, making a positive difference in our community.

In his free time, Gus loves to watch movies and TV, as well as to play video games; he joined the E-Sports team at RMA in the fall and cites his favorite video game as Borderlands 2. He also goes to the gym and works out with his personal trainer to stay in shape. Rounding out his broad personality with many interests, Gus has been playing the piano since he was only 8 years old!

Gus applied to High Point University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte, Appalachian State University, and Hampden-Sydney College. He has recently committed to High Point, where he is looking forward to spending the next four years as he follows in the footsteps of his brother (Clay, who he says is his role model). Although Gus says he will miss the teachers and friends he has at RMA, he’s excited to make new friends and learn through new experiences in college.

He leaves us with this: “Don’t stress about classes and make sure to live in the moment while being yourself.” With Gus’s confident mindset, we have no doubt he will do great at High Point and wherever he ends up after that. We wish him the best of luck and hope he comes back to visit!
