In recent years, HBO has cranked out some iconic, even ground-breaking, television shows. While the network’s dramas True Detective, Game of Thrones, and True Blood, have captivated audiences for years now, HBO’s comedies are often kept in the shadows of primetime television. Falling into this category is Silicon Valley, HBO’s most recent workplace comedy featuring Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, and Zach Woods.

Created by Mike Judge, this comedic sitcom follows the story of Richard Henriks (Middleditch) and his four housemates-turned-employees after he develops a computer program that can download files in record time. In the first episode, he is faced with a decision to either sell the rights to his innovative program to the CEO of Hooli, his current employer, or take a gamble and build up his own enterprise under the guidance of corporate mogul Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch). Turning down millions of dollars, Henriks decides against selling out and begins the complicated and comical process of refining his program and constructing his new company’s business model, naming the corporation Pied Piper. In the subsequent weeks, Henrik’s team is forced to race against the clock and against Hooli, who is attempting to reverse engineer Henriks’ work, in order to finish refining the computer program before it’s unveiling at TechCrunch.

With a terrific cast of up-and-coming actors, fantastic writing and directing, and a captivating but relatable storyline, the quirky, awkward humor in Silicon Valley make the show a must-watch. It combines the workplace shenanigans of NBC’s The Office and the nerdiness of CBS’s Big Bang Theory and pioneers its own kind of comedic masterpiece. The stellar performances of leads Thomas Middleditch and Zach Woods are sure to have viewers’ sides splitting from opening to credits.

With a ninety-six rating on RottenTomatoes, Silicon Valley airs on HBO at 10:00 pm on Sunday nights. It was renewed by the network on April 21, 2014 for a second season, though a premiere date has yet to be released.
