One of our many Senior Spotlights this week is on Dustin Proctor. Dustin came to RMA in the seventh grade from West Edgecombe Middle School, and his outgoing personality quickly made him a part of the RMA family.
The most important thing to know about Dustin is that he absolutely loves being outdoors, and his life here at RMA reflects that. Though we love basketball here in the South, Dustin would much rather be on a field than on a court. In

8th-9th grades, he played football as a safety and receiver, but his number-one sport is baseball. In high school, Dustin played baseball all four years as a catcher, outfielder, pitcher, and shortstop. When asked about the effect baseball has had on his life, Dustin says baseball has taught him discipline. This season, Dustin has the most hits on the team (8), the most runs (10), the highest batting average on the team (0.471), one home run, and a perfect fielding average. As you can see, he is incredibly talented!
If you’re familiar with RMA’s campus, then you know that not far from Dustin’s beloved baseball diamond is the Dr. K Walking Trail. Dustin is an active member of Rocky Mount Academy’s Conservation Club, which lets students help preserve the trails and wildlife that border the school’s property. This preservation comes in the form of cleaning the trails and keeping them clearly marked, building bird houses, and making sure all the feeders are filled.
When not at school, Dustin takes advantage of all the outdoor sports and activities we have here in eastern North Carolina. He enjoys many different forms of hunting, but his favorite is duck hunting because, he says, it brings him

the most thrilling. Dustin also spends time on the water, where he enjoys deep-sea fishing, and at Busco Beach, where he goes four-wheeling with friends. His time outside isn’t all fun and games, though: Dustin also works for Mr. Jacob Parker (who you might know as the man who keeps our buses running), doing landscaping.
In keeping with his personality as a nature lover, Dustin is taking Marine Biology this year with Dr. Wells. Other classes include English 12 with Dr. O’Brien, Algebra III/Trigonometry with Ms. Smith, and Sports Medicine and Weightlifting with Coach Jones. He also spends one class period daily helping Mrs. Whitehead with the Exceptional Children’s program, making him a team player outside of athletics, too.
Dustin intends to enter trade school at Nash Community to become a lineman, doing crucial work in his community while also spending time in the outdoors he loves so much.
