Faculty Focus: Ms. Jordan Carter

Faculty Focus: Ms. Jordan Carter

Colby Kirkpatrick, Editor-in-Chief

This week’s Faculty Focus features popular upper school mathematics teacher, Ms. Jordan Carter.  Joining the RMA family four years ago, Ms. Carter has been extremely involved on campus, coaching the soccer and (surprisingly) swim teams as well as helping out with cross country. Check out our interview with her below to get to know her a little better.

Where are you from originally? Born and raised in Rocky Mount/Nashville

Where did you go to college? Barton College (to play soccer)

Major? Why did you choose it? Double Major in Mathematics and Secondary Education with a Minor in Computer Information Systems

Post Grad school? ECU for Mathematics

What are your hobbies/interests? Anything outdoors, running, triathlons, and puzzles

Have you been involved in sports, music, art, etc. growing up? If so, elaborate. Soccer (since I was 4), softball, golf – and I played the clarinet through middle school 😉

Have you had any experiences abroad? Not yet!

If you had to select one moment in your life that defined you, what would it be? The day I graduated from graduate school – that was a tough couple of years and I was proud I accomplished that.

What made you want to pursue a career in teaching? I love teaching and seeing “the lightbulb” go off with students.  It’s pretty awesome to see a student that has struggled with math, catch on and enjoy the subject.

What is something nobody knows about you? In 5th grade, I got kicked off of the Safety Patrol for stabbing a boy with a pencil after he pushed me down.  My parents have always taught me to stand up for myself 😉

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? My ultimate goal is to teach at the college level, so hopefully as a professor somewhere near the beach!

Describe a person who has made the biggest impact on your life. I can’t choose just one, so that would be my parents.  They have supported me through all the years and still do to this day.  From soccer tournaments and cross country races every weekend in high school, to college games all over the southern part of the country, to those days I didn’t think I would make it through grad school, and my career decisions, they have stayed behind me and keep pushing me to become a better person.  I could never thank them enough!

What are your biggest pet peeves? Students that don’t care, getting behind slow people in the grocery store, not having clean running shoes

Describe your dream vacation. Anything place that involves warm weather, the sunshine, and some form of water

What is your favorite TV show and why? Criminal Minds.  I enjoy most of the crime shows, but this one is my favorite because it gets you thinking.  Plus some of the story lines are more believable.

What is your favorite part about being at Rocky Mount Academy? Getting to know the students and faculty on a more personal level.  I love the small classes and getting to see the students grow from year to year.
