This week, our Senior Spotlight focuses on the senior class’s very own Law Kitchin. Looking from the outside, one would think that Law was a Rocky Mount Academy “lifer” because of the way she effortlessly interacts with all of her friends and classmates, but surprisingly, she has only been at RMA since the 6th grade. When thinking of a few ways to describe Law, it is hard because she is so versatile, as she exhibits every great quality. After a lot of thought, I have realized Law’s key qualities that make her stand out from others are her kind disposition, creativity, sense of humor, trustworthiness, and laid back personality.  All of these attributes make her a lovable person and a great friend. It is evident that these qualities do not go unnoticed because classmate and friend, Shelton Honey, said, “ Kitchin, which is my nickname for Law, has been one of my best friends since she came to RMA in the sixth grade. There are so many things I love about Law, but a few of my favorites are her caring nature, her joyful and goofy personality, and her ability to make anyone laugh. Law is truly an amazing friend who has always been there for me whenever I need her. I am so fortunate to have had her in my life for the past six years. I really am going to miss seeing her everyday next year, but I know we will continue to be great friends. I love Kitchin so much and can’t wait to see where her future takes her.”

Outside of school, Law enjoys doing numerous things such as playing volleyball and basketball, hunting, painting, and of course hanging out with her friends. Since sixth grade, Law has been my best friend and my partner in crime, so much that her father used to say,  “When Law and Lindsay get together, they are like a pack of wild animals.” I not only love Law, but I also admire her. In fact, the things I admire most about Law are how easy she is to approach, how well she tells a good story, and how important she makes her friends feel. Law’s first cousin and fellow classmate, Mary Hanna Bryant, said, “I am so thankful that I’ve been able to have a built-in best friend as my cousin. Growing up, Law could always make me laugh harder than anyone else, so hard, in fact, that my stomach would hurt. From going on gator rides in our grandma’s yard, making up pool games together, and falling off my electric scooter (we both tried to ride at once), Law and I have been through it all. Although she has so many great characteristics, I am especially grateful for her ability to cheer me up and for her comforting presence. Although next year I’ll miss practices with her, going out to long lunches together, and getting slushies before games, I’m sure we’ll have many more memories to come. As for Law’s future, I have no doubt that her creativity will allow her to excel in whatever path she chooses. Love you, Law!”

In relation to academics, Law succeeds in the classroom. This year, Law’s class schedule consists of Ceramics, Honors Calculus, AP English, AP Psychology, Yearbook, and Art 3. Law’s dedication to her studies does not go unnoticed by her classmates or teachers because she has received numerous academic awards including  High Achievement in Spanish I and II Honors, A Honor Roll since the 9th grade, and Excellence in Art 9. Law’s dedication and determination is not only seen in the classroom, but also in sports. During her high school career, Law has been an integral part of the  RMA girl’s volleyball and basketball teams.  Her competitive nature and athletic abilities are showcased in her athletic awards and achievements, which are All-Tournament for basketball and All-Conference for volleyball. In addition to school athletics, Law has played travel volleyball for three years for ECJVC. When asked about this experience, Law said, “I have played travel volleyball for three years now, and I have spent a lot of time in the gym working to grow as a volleyball player and a leader on the court. We have traveled to many places, and it has been so much fun meeting new people and playing a sport I love so much.”

In relation to future plans, Law has applied to NC State, UGA , LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and ECU. Once Law has committed to a college, she wishes to pursue a career in textiles or interior design. With Law’s perseverance and determination, I have no doubt that she will achieve her professional and personal dreams. On an ending note, I would like to close by saying, there is no one and there never will be anyone like “Lawbug”. She is the absolute best!  Whoever gets to spend the next four years with her in college is the luckiest person on earth!
