Varsity Football

To say that the Rocky Mount Academy Boys Varsity Football team is starting the season with high expectations would be an understatement.  After the best football season in Rocky Mount Academy school history, high standards have been set for the 2014-2015 team.

Varsity Football improved tremendously in the 2013-2014 season thanks to new coach BW Holt.  Coach Holt helped to lead RMA to its first NCISAA State Championship against Southampton Academy.  This was an incredible turnaround from the previous season which saw the Eagles have a losing record.  This season, the team is led by a group of veteran seniors and juniors, all of whom have experience in winning a championship.

The Eagles have been working towards another championship caliber team.  Junior linebacker and backup quarterback Kyle Holland gave an update on the team, saying, “We have been hitting the weight room all summer, and running a lot.  We lost a great group of seniors last year, and everyone has to step up.  Some people are [playing offense and defense] so we need to be in shape.”  Defensively team is led by senior cornerback Jackson Browder, senior outside linebacker Trevor Graham.  In addition, junior Gage Chilton, junior Kyle Holland, and senior Jaequan Mills are the major run-stoppers for the defense.  In their first game against Halifax, there were three turnovers forced and only three first downs allowed.

Offensively the team runs off of Coach Holts Wing-T scheme.  The offense is led by senior quarterback Brice Andracchio and junior running back Jacob Hunter.  Despite losing four starting offense lineman, the Eagles frontline is young but showed promise in their first outing, beating Halifax Academy 29-0.

Their next game is Friday, September 5, 7:00 pm at Rocky Mount Academy.  They play Hobgood Academy.  The Eagles lost a brutal game at Hobgood Academy last year 72-40, one of their two losses for the season.  Make sure to show your support for the Eagles, and come out and cheer them on!

Varsity Soccer

Rocky Mount Academy Varsity Boys Soccer program is looking for more improvement this year under the guidance of Coach Larry Smith.  The Eagles had a solid season last year, despite losing a huge group of seniors from the year before.  They look to continue last year’s growth, with the loss of only a few players, by continuing to win key games.

The Eagles are led offensively by a group of juniors: Brendan Acker, Noah Hux, Hunter Franks and Grayson Reams.  Grayson Reams is the current leading goal scorer for the team with five goals.  Coach Larry Smith changed the team’s formation to boost the offensive power of the team, and so far his moved has paid off.  Brendan Acker is the center of the Eagle’s offense.  He provides key passes and long distance goal scoring and is a constant threat to opponents.

Defensively the team is led by senior Colby Kirkpatrick.  Colby is a veteran fifth year varsity player and has tremendous speed.  He scored his first ever varsity goal against Pope John Paul III.  On the 2014 season, Kirkpatrick states, “Our new formation is working well.  Our biggest problem will be staying fresh and healthy since numbers are so small this year with only one substitution.”   Senior Christian Tony has stepped up to play goalie for the team despite having no previous experience.  Tony shows great natural athletic ability and leadership.

The Eagles currently possess a 2-1 record with wins against Harrells Christian Academy and Pope John Paul and a loss against Parrott Academy.  They look to continue their winning record in the upcoming week against Grace Christian School-Raleigh, Tuesday, September 2nd at Home, and Arendell Parrot Academy and The Epiphany School away.

The RMA Boys Varsity Cross Country team is led by senior Spencer Bullock.  The boys and girls cross country teams go to practice and meets together.  The team is coached by Michelle Meadows, who is an avid runner.  The boy’s team is composed of Stephen Ward, Rhoney Harris, Davis Brown, and Spencer Bullock.  The Eagles run Today, August 29th, at Faith Christian.
