RMA Winter Sports Wrap Up

With 70 degree days and spring quickly approaching, our winter sports season is coming to an end. The Eagle Examiner will take a closer look at how each varsity team finished this season.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The Varsity Girls had another successful season this year. The girls showed a tremendous amount of hustle every time they stepped on the court and demonstrated a great amount of improvement throughout the season. However, they did have a competitive season and a tough schedule, competing against some of the top teams in the state. In the conference tournament, the girls got a first round home game due to seeding, but unfortunately they faced Kerr Vance Academy, one of the top teams in the conference. The girls came up short against Kerr Vance, keeping them from advancing in the tournament and bringing the season to a close. Although that was not the ending the girls had hoped for, they have so many accomplishments to be proud of. Julia High was awarded All – Conference and Madison Glover and Rachel Scott Dunn received All – Conference Honorable Mention. With lots of young talent moving up next year, the Varsity Girls have a bright future ahead of them.

Varsity Boys Basketball

Losing several key players from last year, the boys knew from the start that the season was not going to be easy. They worked hard in practice and in every minute of every game to accomplish the well-earned title of CIC Conference tournament Champions! In regular season play, they boys were conference runner ups behind Crossroads Academy which is a very impressive, experienced team with a lot of talent. However, in the tournament the boys were not settling for anything other than first place. For the first round of the tournament, RMA hosted a home game. RMA took control from the beginning and had a rather easy victory advancing the Eagles to the semifinals round. During this round the boys faced Kerr Vance at Kerr Vance Academy. As expected, the gym was loud and Kerr Vance was ready to fight. But, once again the boys came out victorious, led by great senior leadership and a never give up attitude. In the championship, the boys faced regular season conference champs, Crossroads Christian. The team undeniably played one of their best games all season. Hitting outside shots and rebounding strong underneath, our boys became unstoppable. However, Crossroads did not go down without a fight. The game was close all the way until the end, finishing with a 71-69 Eagle victory. Trey Smelcer and AJ Mitchell were named as members of the All – Tournament team and AJ Mitchell was also named the tournament MVP. The Eagles will play in the first round of the state play offs this Tuesday.

Varsity Swim Team

The Rocky Mount Academy girl’s swim team brought home the Conference Championship for the first time in ten years defeating the dominating force of Epiphany. Tensions were high going into the award ceremony and the girls were ecstatic with the news. Jillian Lavely was named All-Conference honorable mention, while Kayla Miller was named All-Conference. The team’s coach, Margaret Godwin, was awarded the well-deserved title of Coach of the Year for all her hard work. The boy’s team also finished out strong, placing fifth in the conference. Brandon Miller was named All-Conference while Matthew Serraino was all conference honorable mention. In total, the swim team came away with nine gold, two silver, and five bronze medals. Every member of the team contributed to the success by scoring in each event. Both teams head to the state meet on February 20th and hope to bring back even more medals.
