Turner W. Battle Scholarship Beneficiaries

Recently, on December 14th, Rocky Mount Academy announced its 2016-2017 Turner W. Battle Scholarship recipients. This scholarship began with one of the founders of Rocky Mount Academy, Mr. Turner Battle. Apart from being a founding member, Mr. Battle also served as Chairman of the Board for six years. Mr. Battle’s commitment to RMA and its students was evident even after his death in 1974. Since then, board members established the Turner Battle Scholarship in his honor and is proudly the oldest and largest scholarship fund at RMA. This scholarship fund has awarded over 200 students who meet the selection criteria of leadership, scholarship, college potential and school spirit.

The presentation morning was filled with celebratory family members, Anne’s donuts and Dewey’s cookies. This year, the recipients of the Turner Battle are Colby Freeman (9th), Elias Moore (11th), Paul King (12th), Emily Cheston (12th), Anna Scott Wingfield (12th), and Julia High (12th). These students are all extremely involved in life at Rocky Mount Academy and are well deserving of this honor. Presenting them with plaques were the three Trustees of the Turner W. Battle Scholarship, Jeffrey Batts, David Warren and Richard Battle, son of Turner W. Battle.  Each recipient now has to look forward to the annual awards ceremony later in the year, where they will each be presented with recognition and a two dollar bill, a trademark of Turner Battle. Congratulations recipients, you represent our school well!
