RMA Student Participates in Eastern Regional Orchestra
March 12, 2016
Rocky Mount Academy freshman Ann Sumner Thorp played the violin in the North Carolina Eastern Regional Orchestra (also referred to as All State) on the weekend of February 19th, representing not only Rocky Mount Academy, but her community. The Eastern Regional Orchestra was hosted by the North Carolina School of Science and Math from February 19-21, bringing together more than 200 student musicians from eastern North Carolina to rehearse and perform together. The workshop, organized by the North Carolina Music Educators Association, culminated in a concert which was free and open to the public.
Ann Sumner auditioned for this highly competitive orchestra in early January and with 10 years of violin experience, she was easily accepted. The auditioning wasn’t over, however, as the first Friday night of the weekend, auditions were held again to assign seating for the individual sections. Ann Sumner was named the principal chair of the second violins, a great honor and testament to her shining talent. She also was given a solo in one song that she learned Saturday night to perform the next day! The orchestra practiced their total of six pieces all day Saturday and half of Sunday concluding with a concert Sunday afternoon in Durham.
When asked about her experience, student Ann Sumner enthusiastically responded “I improved tremendously in violin while there, and I also met many new friends. It was really fun, and I hope to do it again next year.” Ann Sumner’s dedication and passion for violin is demonstrated by her extensive rehearsal schedule. Whether she is practicing on her own, at a private lesson with the Tar River Strings, or traveling for rehearsal or a concert, Ann Sumner is doing what she loves. Still only in ninth grade, who knows how Ann Sumner will continue to grow and participate in many more weekends like this!
Make sure to congratulate her when you spot her in the hallways!
