Events Throughout History: the Month of February

February is an odd month in itself being that every four years, it has 29 days instead of the usual 28.  Aside from that brain twister (try explaining to kids that sometimes there are 366 days in a year, yikes!), February comes right after January; the month where resolutions are made and broken and people lose hope after a solid three days. Speaking of hope, February also comes with the exciting holiday (for couples), Valentine’s Day.  While most people only think of these staples for February, below is a list of other important events that occurred between February 1st and 28th.

February 1st, 2004- Janet Jackson flashed the crowd (caused by Justin Timberlake) during the Super Bowl half time show.

February 2nd, 1893- Sears opened its first store.

February 3rd, 1959- Rock ‘n’ Roll singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) were killed in a plane crash.

February 4th, 2004- Facebook network was founded by Mark Zuckerberg.

February 5th, 1922- Readers Digest was first published.

February 6th, 1926- The first doughnut making machine was created.

February 7th, 1964- The Beatles arrived on their first visit to the United States.

February 8th, 1910- The Boy Scouts of America, was founded.

February 9th, 1961- President Kennedy asked Congress to approve a health insurance program (The Medicare Program).

February 10th, 1763- The French and Indian War can to an end.

February 11th, 1945- President Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet leader Josef Stalin signed the Yalta Agreement.

February 12th, 1958 -The first Trans-Atlantic passenger jetliner service started.

February 13th, 1960- France became the world’s fourth atomic power.

February 14th, 1948- NASCAR held its first race for modified stock cars on a 3.2 mile-course at Daytona Beach.

February 15th, 1982- The world’s largest oil rig (The Ocean Ranger) sank in the North Atlantic.

February 16th, 1968- The first 911 emergency telephone system was created in Haleyville, Alabama.

February 17th, 1911- The first electric self-start was installed in a Cadillac.

February 18th, 2001- Dale Earnhardt died in a crash during the Daytona 500.

February 19th, 2008- Fidel Castro retired as President of Cuba.

February 20th, 1986- The Soviet Union launched the world’s biggest space station, Mir.

February 21st, 1995- Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon.

February 22nd, 1997 -Scottish scientists announced the first cloned sheep (Dolly).

February 23rd, 1954- Polio vaccines started in United States.

February 24th, 1942- Voice of America went on the air for the first time.

February 25th, 2010- 75% of the world’s population used mobile phones.

February 26th, 1919- Congress established Grand Canyon National Park.

February 27th, 1922- The Nineteenth Amendment to The Constitution was passed.

February 28th, 1954- The DNA Double Helix was discovered.
