This past week Rocky Mount Academy varsity girls’ soccer team faced their infamous rival, Faith Christian School. The competitiveness between the eagles and the patriots is one that has been existent for some time now and each time they go head-to-head each school is vying for that win. The Varsity girls soccer team faired very well last Tuesday as they finished off the two 40 minute halves with a score of 4-1, sealing their first win of the season. This is a huge improvement from last year’s score which came out to be a close game even though the eagles won that game as well.

The eagles came out strong in the beginning with a goal from senior Ashley Bissette, which came from a free kick, resulting from a handball by a patriots’ defender. This was followed by two goals from senior Rachel Williams who had her first goals of the season. Rachel speaks of her two goals by saying “I think it was a very surprising moment for everyone.” The last score by the eagles came from junior Katie Gutshall. Gutshall had an open shot in the box during the second half and she blasted a shot at the goal. It ricocheted off of a patriot defender and made it past the goalie for another point for the eagles.

For the majority of the game the eagles’ defense held FCS from scoring until the very end of the game. The defense included seniors Ann Claire Roberson, Claire Stanovich, Nyla Green, and Chelsea Walden (goalkeeper) along with junior Emma Grace Sprinkle. The ball stayed on the eagles’ offensive side for most of the game except for a few fast breaks that were scooped up by the eagles’ goalkeeper Chelsea Walden. It was not until the end of the second half that FCS was able to score and finish the game with a score of 4-1. Great job eagles!

The eagles will play their rivals again across town at Faith Christian School of Rocky Mount later in the season.
