Top 10 Disney Channel Movies
After hours (literally hours) of deliberation, the Media Office has finally made its decision on what ranks as the best of the best when it comes to the familiar and fantastic classic Disney Channel movies. The Disney Channel of today is nothing compared to our generation’s time. There were many ups and downs along the way, but overall channel 41 provided each of us with the ability to dream big and reach for the stars! We commend you late 90’s and early 00’s Disney Channel! Bravo!
Pixel Perfect: In this movie, Phil of the Future’s Raviv Ullman creates one of the biggest Disney love triangles complete with a digital girl and a best friend who he never seems to notice. Bring on the drama, Disney Channel.
Get a Clue: “Wake up, who knew, it’s me, it’s you, get a clue.”
Stuck in the Suburbs: Two Words: Jordan Cahill
The Thirteenth Year: A kid who turns from an average boy into a merman… how cool is that? Every kid wanted to grow scales and a tail just like Cody Griffin.
Life-Size: Just remember “Shine bright, shine far, be a star, where you live, where you are, be a star.”
My Date with the President’s Daughter : Everyone’s favorite Eric Matthews from the classic show Boy Meets World stars as the lucky guy who gets to spend a date with the president’s daughter (hence the creative title).
The Color of Friendship: Always shown on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this film is quite rare and is one only true Disney Channel fans have come to love.
Double Team: Twin sisters who are super tall and good at both volleyball and basketball, what’s not to love?
Gotta Kick It Up!: Si, se puede! Si, se puede!
Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-Off: He’s a wiz on the baseball diamond and also in the kitchen. All Disney Channel fans were wondering if there was anything that Eddie Ogden could not do.
This is where it gets really tough.
- Smart House: Ryan Merriman is back again with yet another Disney Channel classic, Smart House. If you are not someone who would move into a computerized house given the opportunity, then this movie is not for you. The Cooper family wins the ultimate version of a Disney Channel “sweepstakes” when they are chosen to be the first family to live in a technological savvy house complete with its own “mother” board. This movie features dance numbers to songs such as“C’est la Vie!”by the 90’s irish pop band B*witched and the memorable “Jump Jump the House is Jumpin.”
- Motocrossed: What happens when you’re a girl trying to make it in a world of boys? Well that’s what happens to teenage Andrea Carson who has a great love for motocross. Her dad thinks that this sport is unsuitable for girls and forbids her to race, but when her older brother gets injured and her father goes out of town for work, Andrea seeks a big opportunity. She cuts her hair and pretends to be her brother, so she can prove to everyone that girls can do everything boys can. Andrea wins the final competition race and falls in love in the process with competitor, Dean, who thinks that she is really a boy. The moral of the story was spot on for Disney and that is why it was a success.
- High School Musical: This hit series took the world by storm. It is loved by people young and old since “we’re all in this together.” It might be because Troy Bolton stole the heart of every young girl or maybe it was all of the catchy songs. There is not anyone who can say that they have never broken out into “Breaking Free” or “Get Your Head in the Game.” All three of the movies in the series were very successful. The final one, High School Musical: Senior Year was the only Disney Channel Original Movie to make it to the big screen and, as Sharpay would say, it was “fabulous”.
- The Cheetah Girls: There is only one way to describe these three movies: CHEETAHLICIOUS! The fab four made up of Galleria (Raven Symone), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan), and Aqua (Kiely Williams) were sassy and fierce as they battled their way through high school while still trying to make it in the music industry. The first movie was a classic, but it was the second in the series that stole the show. The girls wished on a star to travel to Barcelona and compete in the Barcelona Music Festival. They had a few set-backs while in the Spanish city, including low self-esteem from Dorinda and the annoying Lola, the mother of Spanish teen pop star Marisol, who tries to break up the cheetah girls. All is right in the end when they finally perform at the festival and realize that they really are “Amigas Cheetahs, friends for life.” The third film, Cheetah Girls: One World did not even come close to being as great as the first two. This was probably due to the fact that it was lacking Raven Symone – who let’s be honest – basically ran that squad.
- Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century: “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom. Make my heart go Boom, Boom.” is exactly what Proto Zoa, the rock idol from the band Microbe, did to the girls of our generation. However, it was the megastellar Zenon Kar and her best friend Nebula Wade who stole the show in the original movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. Zenon was just your ordinary girl with an extra-ordinary life, one that included living full time on a space ship (no big deal). She had big adventures both in space with her space family and on earth with her Aunt Judy. The series went on to produce two more films, Zenon: The Zequel and Zenon: Z3. This movie was so popular that two RMA seniors chose to portray the best friends Zenon and Nebula this year for Character Day during Spirit Week.
- Cadet Kelly: Hilary Duff stars as Kelly Collins, a fearless middle schooler who is guilty of quite a few of the recent Eagle Examiner’s Top Ten Regrets from Middle School (but what 2000s girl isn’t?). Kelly just wants to be herself and live her own life where she makes the rules. However, when her single mother announces that they are moving to be closer to her new fiancé, Kelly’s world is turned upside down. She has been given the worst news possible: military school. How will she be able to express herself with all of the structured suits, overbearing rules, and of course the overly controlling Cadet Captain Jennifer, played by the Disney Channel’s Christy Carlson Romano (Even Stevens)?
- Luck of the Irish: It’s the luck of the Irish that brought this movie around each year in the month of March. It was a great break from all the Disney Channel Christmas movies right before the summer premieres would begin. After its release in 2001, this film could be seen on reruns year after year as it was a fan favorite. An enchanting story of a kid who loses his family’s magical gold coin that keeps them in human form, The Luck of the Irish keeps true to the whole St. Patrick’s Day theme with Kyle Johnson (Ryan Merriman), the film’s protagonist, and his half-leprechaun family. Once the coin is lost, Kyle and his mother are slowly transforming into leprechauns and it is up to Kyle to, like in most Disney Channel movies, save the day before it is too late.
- Even Steven’s Movie: A great spin-off from the already pretty awesome TV series, the movie takes place on an island where the crazy Stevens’ family has been tricked into vactioning on. Their “vacation” is really just used as the plot for a TV series that their friends are watching back home called “Family Fake Out.” They make it through most of the trip even though they are really put to the test. This movie is a classic and the great cast of characters along with the unforgettable Beans makes this movie in the top five on this list.
- Halloweentown: Marnie Cromwell was just a girl who had a hidden secret, so hidden that she herself did not even know about. She was forbidden from ever participating in any activities on Halloween and it was all because she came from a long line of witches and her mother refuses to accept the truth that Marnie, too, will soon become a witch. Marnie’s grandmother comes every year on Halloween because that is the only time that the portal will be open from Halloweentown, the magical town where Halloween is celebrated year round, to Earth. Marnie and her siblings sneak back with their grandmother and have many adventures while in Halloweentown. The film released three sequels, two of which were equally fantastic and one that did not make the cut for this list since they replaced the lead with the subpar actress, Sara Paxton. Although, we can all agree that Halloweentown High was really the best out of the series.
- 1. The Lizzie McGuire Movie: Hilary Duff has done it again… what girl didn’t want to be THE Lizzie McGuire? Her show was the best thing to hit TV and the movie was just as magical! Lizzie McGuire had the life. She got to go to Italy and become a major international pop star. Even though there is about a one in a million chance that this would happen in real life, girls all across the world could only fantasize about that one day happening to them too. This movie is “What dreams are made of” which is why it comes in at number one. We commend you Lizzie McGuire for allowing us to still love you even though you crushed our dreams of ever becoming a part of any International Pop Duo.
