Summer jobs may seem like a waste of your months off school, but in reality, they can help to make your summer more enjoyable! Being around others and doing something you love can help you to have a positive attitude about the summer. Some jobs, like being one of those developers, sound more appealing than others, but there are quite a few options around the Rocky Mount area if you are a young person searching for a job. Whether you are on the hunt for work for the money or simply to keep yourself off the couch, there are wide variety of choices out there.

10. Restaurant Employee: With many fast food restaurants in Rocky Mount and the surrounding areas, the options are endless. For example, Chick-fil-A in Rocky Mount is known for its great customer service and connection with the community. If you are up for the challenge of serving others during busy breakfast, lunch, and dinner hours then food services is the job for you!

9. Tutoring: If you excel in a certain subject such as math, science, or reading and you have a knack for helping others, tutoring would be a great fit for you. There are younger students and also students your own age – maybe even your friends – who need academic help and are willing to pay you for it.

8. Camp Counselor: There are many summer camps held for children of all ages around Rocky Mount. From karate camps at the YMCA to week-long 4-H sewing camps at the Ag Center in Nashville, there are many opportunities to work with children in our community. You even may learn something yourself!

7. Retail Sales: For many, especially girls, working in a boutique would be an enjoyable way to spend your summer. Working in a smaller store such as Lilly and Lane in Rocky Mount, you would be able to interact with the customers and give your own suggestions and opinions. If you have a passion for fashion, then a job in retail would fit you to a T!

6. Sports Lessons: The great summer weather of North Carolina motivates students to leave their comfort zones and try new things. Students just starting out with a new sport such as tennis or golf would greatly benefit from having an experienced player give them pointers. Also during the summer swimming pools around Rocky Mount host their summer league swim teams and are always on the lookout for teenage help!

5. Mowing Lawns: If you are willing to sweat and get dirty, then mowing lawns would be a good job for you! Many neighbors who are elderly or do not own a lawnmower would greatly appreciate a young man or lady willing to sacrifice his or her time to cut their grass. If you are very dedicated and accumulate a lot of customers, you could start your own business and it could grow into something big!

4. Internship: For students who know what career they want to pursue in the future, finding an internship available in that field would greatly benefit their future. For example, working in a law office would help you to gain a feel for the role of a lawyer even if you would be simply sorting papers and performing secretarial jobs. There are many other options as well thanks to the many small businesses located in Rocky Mount.

3. Nanny/Babysitter: For teenagers who enjoy and have enough patience to be around kids, being a nanny or babysitter is an ideal summer job. During the summer, there are many fun activities you can do with the child or children you are babysitting. Most kids are satisfied going swimming with friends, but they would love going on little trips to the museum or the park. Babysitting will give you guaranteed money to pay for gas and other expenses you may have.

2. Pet-sitting: If you are a dog, cat, or even lizard lover, becoming a pet sitter could be an enjoyable way to earn money and have fun with animals. Rather than paying to board pets, many people will give a young person the key to their house and also the important responsibility of feeding and letting their pet (whatever it may be) outside.

1. Lifeguard: Along with the warm weather of North Carolina summers, comes the busy pool season. Despite the training required, many teenagers choose to become a lifeguard as it allows them to be outdoors and around other people in the community. Also, who could pass up a good tan?
