New Inductee: Emily Cheston’s Top 10 Coachella Artists

The Rocky Mount Academy Media Office is proud to introduce you to our newest Eagle Examiner writer, Emily Cheston. Aside from her knack from stringing fluid sentences together (and “on-point” taste in music) , Emily’s interesting topic for her top ten jumped out at us as the perfect way to add an entirely new perspective to the Media Office for the 2015-2016 school-year. Check out her incredibly impressive article below:

During Spring Break, music festivals can be a popular option for high school and college students across the country. Coachella Music Festival, located in Indio, California, is probably one of the most well-known. This festival showcases many different genres with mainly lesser-known artists every year and their lineup is usually un-matched. Between great music, friends, and warm weather, you can’t go wrong with this event. Sadly, for those on the east coast, a plane ticket, hotel, and event ticket can make this adventure a bit too expensive, so here’s a glimpse into the wide variety of music that Coachella has showcased in the past or will be having this year!

  1. Alabama Shakes

This soulful group is based out of Athens, Alabama and is fueled by powerful lead singer Brittany Howard. Some of their hits have been Hold On, I Found You, and Rise To The Sun which, just as the rest of their songs, feature a southern blend of rock and blues.

  1. Steely Dan

While many of our parents are probably familiar with this band from the 70’s, you shouldn’t pass up their blasts from the past. These feel good songs can put you in a good mood even on a bad day. Some songs that are worth a listen are Reelin’ In The Years, Do It Again, and Kid Charlemagne.

  1. Chet Faker

For those more interested in electronically produced music, this artist is definitely worth listening to. Hailing from Australia, this talented electronica musician has created hits like Drop The Game, Talk Is Cheap, and even a remake of R&B group Blackstreet’s No Diggity.

  1. OutKast

This group is certainly well-known and has many songs that are familiar with just about everyone. Featuring the unique voice of Andre 3000, you can easily recognize when a song is by this group. Some classics are Hey Ya!, Ms. Jackson, and So Fresh, So Clean.

  1. Paul & The Broken Bones

This group from Birmingham, Alabama is bringing back the nostalgia of the 50’s and 60’s. Their songs always feature horns which creates an immediate throwback mentality. Their songs Call Me and Like a Mighty River perfectly showcase what this group is all about.

  1. Beck

This 90’s alternative artist made a comeback in 2014 with the album Morning Phase. He rose to fame with the hit Loser and now has recently won a Grammy for his album which features hits like happy, upbeat songs like Morning, and relaxing ones like Blue Moon.

  1. Cage The Elephant

Don’t let this band’s name discourage you from listening because you will definitely miss out. This indie-rock group has a balance of upbeat as well as slower songs. Having been to their concert in Raleigh, I can say that they are great live as well. Their most popular hit is Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked; however Come a Little Closer and Take It or Leave It shouldn’t be overlooked.

  1. Slightly Stoopid

This California-Reggae group is great for lifting spirits and an overall great jam session. Their songs are all about a living without worries and have seen this group live as well; I confidently say that they know how to warm up a crowd. Some songs I would definitely recommend are 2am, Babylon Is Falling, Ur Love, and Anywhere I Go.

  1. Chromeo

Chromeo is a current group reminiscent of the 80’s because of their electronic synthesizers and turntable scratching. Their songs are made for dancing and their hits Come Alive and Night By Night are perfect examples of their ability.

  1. Toro Y Moi

While this eccentric artist isn’t for everyone, his repetitive music has the ability to transport you as you listen. Born in Colombia, South Carolina, this musician uses electronic sounds and vocals to entertain listeners. Some of his chill-out songs include, Say That, So Many Details, and Harm In Change.
