Alumni Update: Elizabeth Hull

Elizabeth Hull, a member of the class of 1999, is the subject of this week’s alumni update. Elizabeth now lives on the west coast, something different than any of our previous Alumni Updates. Read our exclusive interview below to find out more about Elizabeth.

Where are you from originally?

  1. Tarboro, N.C.

Where did you go to college?

  1. Hollins University

Major? Why did you choose it?

  1. a. I was an art history major and that made sense to me because I was interested in making things (studio art) but also have a strong interest in philosophy and world history. My foundation for philosophy became an interest at RMA through a class I took my Junior year. I decided against philosophy as a major since art history and the overarching discussion of art involves philosophy quite heavily, as well as social and political histories, fashion, design, etc.

Post grad school?

  1. No. I thought it was more important to learn through working. With an art history major, I wholeheartedly believe that work experience is the best path for this particular industry. School will always be there but learning through experience is invaluable and can’t be gained any other way.

Where do you live now?

  1. Los Angeles, in the Hollywood Hills

What are your hobbies/ interests

  1. I make perfume and organic body products.

Have you ever been involved with sports, music, art, ect. growing up? If so, elaborate

  1. I was involved in very many extracurricular activities but most all have become hobbies now.

Have you had any experiences abroad?

  1. Yes, I travel abroad regularly for work, specifically for art fairs like Art Basel in Switzerland, FIAC in Paris and Frieze in London.

Have you had one moment in life that has defined you? If so, what was it?

  1. There are so many moments that have come to define me, but I really think the most pivotal moment was being honored with the scholarship to RMA. I wouldn’t have had a philosophy class at my high school in Tarboro, and I wouldn’t have had the great professors like I did at RMA, both of which preempted my move to New York after graduating from college (Hollins University).

What made you want to pursue your career?

  1. I love so many things but art making and the history of art includes them all… there’s also process of elimination and my gut reaction that guided me to what I wanted to do with the rest of my life; everything should be considered.

What is something that no one knows about you?

  1. I don’t think a secret about me exists!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

  1. Still on the West coast, beginning to amass an art collection from the organic body care line I’m starting this year. All fingers crossed.

Describe one person that has had the biggest impact on your life

  1. My husband, Vincent Szarek.
