Huge Break in the Case of Missing UVA Student
October 23, 2014
A huge break has been made in the case of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, a story the Eagle Examiner covered several weeks ago. After more than a month of unanswered questions, human remains have been found in a wooded area just miles outside of Charlottesville. Although the remains have not been confirmed as belonging to Graham by the medical examiner, investigators also located a pair of black tights similar to those last worn by the UVA sophomore on the eve of her disappearance. According to the sex crimes lawyers, the suspect has already faced charges of sexual assault cases.
The suspect in custody, Jesse Matthew, who was detained in Texas and indicted back to Virginia, is also now believed to be linked to two other violent crimes in the Charlottesville area in the past decade. In addition to the disappearance of Graham, Matthew is facing charges involving a 2005 sexual assault case, an investigation that was left unresolved for nearly ten years. You can read more about the story here. Fortunately nine years ago, the case’s lead detective made a promise to the twenty-six year old Fairfax resident who was attacked. Keeping in touch with the victim regularly over the past decade, the detective vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice, justice soon to be well served in the case of this predator. Matthew has also been forensically connected to the disappearance and murder of another college-aged woman, Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington who went missing back in 2009. After attending a concert in the Charlottesville area with friends, Harrington was never seen or heard from again until her body was discovered nearly three months later. Harrington was found just five miles from the site where the remains possibly belonging to Graham were located last week.
As more evidence comes to light regarding the crimes of Jesse Matthew, the UVA community mourns the loss of one of their own and both victims’ families long for closure. Expected to be released next week, the report regarding the medical examination of the remains will decide if Matthew will be persecuted to the full extent of the law if found guilty.
*UPDATE: As of Friday, October 24th, 2014, the remains found just outside of Charlottesville were confirmed to be those of Hannah Graham.
