Senior Spotlight: Alyssa Hooten

Mary Hanna Bryant, Treasurer

This week’s Senior Spotlight is on an integral member of the class since her joining the school in 10th grade: Alyssa Hooten. When asked to describe herself, she used the words hard-working, dependable, and assertive. While these reign true, I would also add characteristics such as honest and reliable. In regards to her honest nature, Alyssa is sure to vocalize her perspectives and opinions, which is something not many people are able to do.  Her dependability and responsibility shine through as she is always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it be by assisting someone with their work, or with a word of advice. Speaking on Alyssa’s friendly nature, good friend Hannah Achilles stated, “Alyssa is one of the first people I met when transferring to RMA, and she made the switch so easy. She is super easy to talk to, and her sense of humor always brightens my day!”

Alyssa’s diligence is evident as she challenges herself with a schedule of AP Biology, Pre Calculus Honors, Honors English, AP Psychology, Yearbook, and Music Performance. She also proves her skills in math, as she was awarded Academic Excellence in Geometry. Outside of the classroom, Alyssa is involved in the Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Key Club. She also enjoys her time spent working at Food Lion, going to the gym, and hanging out with friends.

Throughout her time at RMA, she has also been a member of the volleyball, softball, and cheer teams. As one of her volleyball teammates, I have been able to witness her positive and uplifting attitude firsthand, which was a major asset to our team. Whether she was on or off the court, she was sure to be cheering on others, making sure they felt valued. Her continuous support for others is a result of her kind spirit, which is conveyed when talking to her. Teammate and friend Chandler Lamm spoke on her nature when stating, “Even on hard days during volleyball season, Alyssa always put all her efforts in. Despite doing cheer and volleyball at the same time, she was always able to show support for her teammates and bring all her energy onto the court. Alyssa never failed to make me laugh during the season. She always had a funny story to tell, and helped me and everyone else keep a positive attitude no matter what. Although I don’t have many classes with her this year, I enjoy talking to her every time I see her in the halls or throughout the school.”

As for future plans, Alyssa has applied to ASU, ECU, Campbell, Elon, Meredith, UNCW, WCU, and High Point, hoping to major in accounting. While Alyssa is undecided on where she will attend college, I feel sure that she will excel wherever she ends up. However, RMA will miss her contagious laugh and smile next year. On an ending note, her good friend Mary Thorpe Smelcer noted,” Alyssa is the kind of friend who is always real, whether it is good or bad. We have always laughed together, and I am going to miss her and our great memories next year!”
