NC State Fair Food Favorites

Mari Robin Tharin, Secretary

After a year off due to COVID in 2020, the NC State Fair is back and is occurring in Raleigh from October 14th to October 24th. While the rides, games, and contests are a huge part of what makes the fair so much fun, it would not be as popular without the variety of foods that everyone loves to give a try. From foods that are incredibly sweet to foods that are geared towards very adventurous eaters, there is something to offer for everyone.

  1. Fried Jell-o: This new fried food has been very popular thus far. Those who have tried it love its gooeiness and love the biscuit-like batter that the Jell-o is put in before being fried. Although not a classic, Fried Jell-o has definitely been a hit at this year’s fair!
  2. The Violet Vampire: A funnel cake loaded with powdered sugar, blueberry pie filling, whipped cream, and chocolate drizzle, the Violet Vampire is essential for anyone with a sweet tooth. The toppings come from the ever popular Gobblin’ Gourmet and truly take funnel cake to the next level.
  3. Fried Chicken and Waffle Kabob: Chicken and waffles is one of my favorite combinations, so I was very excited to hear about this kabob. The kabob is covered with syrup and is sure to satisfy any chicken and waffle fans.
  4. Atomic Tater Tots: Another new food, the atomic tater tots are loaded with cheese sauce, shredded chicken, bacon, sour cream, spicy ranch, and fried hot peppers. These extraordinary tater tots have a little bit of spice and have been a great addition to the fair.
  5. Fried Oreos: Fried Oreos are a fair classic, but I couldn’t leave them out because they are my all time favorite fair food, and they are definitely one of the most popular and widely known fair treats. They are delicious and can satisfy anyone’s craving for sweets.
  6. Shrimp Alfredo Stuffed Turkey Legs: While I am a way too picky eater for this snack, this definitely sounds like something for an adventurous eater. The turkey leg is smoked and filled with alfredo sauce and Cajun shrimp. These unique turkey legs can be found at Hickory Tree Turkey BBQ.
  7. Cornbread & Chilli Funnel Cake: I do not think I have ever heard of a more interesting funnel cake than this one. This cornbread funnel cake is covered with shredded cheese and chilli. This interesting addition to the fair should definitely be an interesting food to try.

No matter what types of foods you like, you will certainly be able to find a new food to try and enjoy at the fair. Be sure to visit the fair and snack on something new before it closes for the year.
