With the recent release of the AP Poll, it has been revealed that for the first time since December 18, 1961, Duke, UNC, and Kentucky are all unranked. These three bluebloods have been staples in the college basketball world for the last six decades. Found below is a list of historical events and the state of affairs of the world in 1961.

  • This was Dean Smith’s first year coaching UNC Basketball, leading them to an 8-9 record with a young and inexperienced team.
  • Kentucky was still coached by Adolph Rupp, for which the Rupp arena is named, and he led the Wildcats to a 4-8 record.
  • The Blue Devils were coached by the legendary Vic Bubas who led them to a 20-5 record.
  • John Calipari was 2, Roy Williams was 11, and Mike Kzyzescski was 14 years old.
  • Dwight Eisenhower gave his famous military-industrial complex speech.
  • The Soviet Union built the wall separating East and West Berlin.
  • The Bay of Pigs invasion failed, and JFK took responsibility for it.
  • Joseph Heller published the famous war satire novel Catch-22.
  • Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space aboard the Vostok 1.
  • Barack Obama and George Clooney were born.
  • The WWF was formed.
  • Fritos and electric toothbrushes were introduced.
  • Ernest Hemingway died.

Really, what I’m saying with all of this is that Roy, Coach K, and Calipari all need to get their acts together and win some games!
