Senior Spotlight: James Whitehurst

Hunter Nealey, Secretary

This week’s Spotlight is shining on the great James Whitehurst. A member of the RMA family since ninth grade, James has brought his quick wit and awesome personality to the class of 2021. When asked to describe himself, he came up with the adjectives witty and humorous, and I couldn’t agree more. James’s sardonic but good-natured humor never fails to brighten my day or give me a laugh when I need it most.

James can be found on most days hanging out in the drama room where his mom, Dawn Whitehurst, has been teaching for years. James enjoys spending his weekends at Lake Gaston, where his family has a house. After school, James will be either practicing on his guitar or playing in his hockey league, where he has won two championships! After a year of playing as his team’s goalie, James now plays as a forward. This year, James will also be playing on the RMA soccer team, making him one of the most active members of the senior class.

When asked about his favorite RMA memory, James says that the school trip to France, where he visited Nice, was a highlight. James enjoyed traveling out of his comfort zone with his friends and family on a trip he says he will never forget.

James hopes to continue his education at NC State, where he would like to major in something involving music or technology. Having known James for many years, I and many others are confident that wherever he ends up, he will bring with him a specific energy, full of humour and passion, that few are able to match.
