Royal Split

Royal Split

Ben Tucker, Secretary

As a place that is steep in traditions, the British royal family has an ancestral line going back more than a thousand years. Many see the monarchy to be a picture of stability in the UK, so it’s safe to say that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, delivered a huge surprise when they announced their plans to step back as senior members of Britain’s royal family. Everyone, even members of Britain’s royal family, was stunned and wondering what the future could hold for the royal family. After returning to the UK following a holiday break from taking part in royal events, they decided they wanted to take a new approach to being royal. In Canada, they announced their plans to become financially independent and split their time between the UK and North America. This doesn’t mean that the two made a decision with little thought. Harry and Meghan said they made the decision after many months of reflection. Prince Harry and Meghan say that they want to be able to raise their son with an appreciation for the royal tradition while also giving them the space they need to move on to the next part of their lives. Even though they are technically leaving, Harry will still remain sixth in line to the throne. This sudden announcement caused lots of confusion for the royals, as the Queen responded by saying that things were complicated and that there was a need for a special meeting to discuss the issue. Following the meeting between some of the royal family members, the Queen announced soon after that she is supportive of the two. However, she would have preferred that they would have stayed. We don’t know if the discussion will end here, but there are many questions as to what the future will hold for Harry, Meghan, and the entirety of the royal family.
