The senior class all dressed up and looking lovely for prom!

Spring means a lot of things for high schoolers. AP exams, final papers, and graduation are all on the list, but so is something else. Prom! Prom is one of the first things people associate with high school or their high school years as it is a loved tradition. RMA held our prom on Friday April 20th, and it was a night to remember.

Some of the amazing juniors looking incredible before prom!

The junior class is responsible for the planning and assembling of prom. Planning starts months in advance when the juniors choose the prom theme and begin brainstorming on their vision. Over a course of weeks, the juniors work with Ms. Carter, Ms. Knox, and Ms. O’Brien to choose the music, make invitations, plan and create the decorations, and complete many other tasks essential to making prom a memorable night for the seniors. Juniors are also responsible for keeping the theme a secret until the seniors get their invitations so it is an exciting surprise for them! This year’s theme was “masquerade.”

The day before prom is the day that juniors pull it all together. The ceiling fabric is hung and adjusted, the bar is set up, tables and centerpieces are placed just so, and anything else on the teachers’ master checklist is completed. On Friday, any last touches are made before juniors and seniors check out at lunchtime to go home and get ready for the big night.

Students return to school at 9 o’clock for the beginning of prom. Prom is kicked of by the senior walk where each senior and his or her date are announced by Ms. Covolo as both parents and faculty watch the elegantly dressed students enter prom. After the senior walk, the first dance is shared by seniors and their parents. This year, Dance Candy, the amazing band that performed at prom, played “Stand By Me” as the seniors and their parents created special memories. After the seniors danced with their parents, they danced with their dates. Then, after that dance was over and picture-taking was over, the dance really kicked off! Parents and faculty left, leaving the dance floor for all seniors and juniors to enjoy.

Students danced the night away, and then at the end of the night, the moment that many had stuck around for finally happened. Ms. Knox took to the stage with students crowded around to announce prom king and queen. First, she announced the winner of prom king, or in this case, winners. By a ridiculously small chance, this year we have had dead ties in both the running for homecoming king and the running for prom king. Our prom kings this year were Luc Garabrant and Jay Crandell. After announcing the two winners, Ms. Knox announced prom queen, who was Holly Brantley! Because there were three winners, the traditional king and queen dance could not take place, so each royalty of the night shared a slow dance with their date or a friend. Overall, the music, the decorations, and  the friendships made 2018 prom a very special night.

A special shout-out has to be given to the sophomores who worked at prom. They manned the bar and Eric Xue took impeccable pictures at the photo booth (taking my picture multiple times to make sure he got one where I wasn’t blinking).

***The senior class would also like to extend a thank you to the junior class, the sophomores who helped, Ms. O’Brien, Ms. Knox, Ms. Carter  and all those who helped make prom possible. It was definitely a night to remember and we truly appreciate all you did to make our prom night special!***
