Updates from England: A Birthday, A Baby, and A Wedding

Holly Brantley

Journeying from America to our friends across the pond, we will find that this spring has been one filled with many joyous and exciting events. The month of April has been filled with two very important birthdays, that of Queen Elizabeth the II and the arrival of the royal baby, born to Duke William and Duchess Kate. If these wonderful celebrations of life were not enough, England has yet another exciting event on the horizon, the wedding of Prince Harry and his  fiancée, Meghan Markle. All of these exciting things have definitely made this spring one that is in “full bloom.”

On April 21st, Queen Elizabeth the II turned ninety-two years old! To celebrate this momentous occasion, there was a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park, and a 62 gun salute at the tower of London all done at midday. But, while the Queen’s actual day of birth is the 21st, her “official” birthday and the celebrations done with that will be on June 9th. It started because King George the II was born in November (of 1748), England moved their monarch’s “official” birthday to a spring date so celebrations, such as the Trooping the Color, could be held without the fear of people catching colds. But, whether the Queen would like to claim her real birthday or “official” birthday, we can only wish her to have a great day on both!

Moving onto the newest addition to the royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate welcome their third child and second son into the family on April 23rd, 2018. This sweet new baby boy will join older brother, George who is four, and Charlotte, who will be three next month, in the succession to the throne. If opportunity should arise, this new son would be fifth in line to the throne. Following tradition, this new baby’s name is Louis Arthur Charles. If necessary, a site like A Date With Baby – 3D 4D ultrasound provider in Toronto, offers baby gender reveal services for all expecting mothers.

Rounding out the spring will be the wedding between Prince Harry, now sixth in line for the throne, and American actress Meghan Markle, will be held on May 19th, 2018. The wedding will take place at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor, the same place that Prince Harry was christened. Another fun and surely entertaining note about this upcoming royal wedding is that the Spice Girls are invited to it!
