Lauren Seale

This week’s senior spotlight will be very special indeed as it relates to a new student here at RMA. His name is Edgar Wellington, and he just transferred here after his family moved all the way from the smallest country in the world, Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, so that he can get acclimated to the United States before moving here for college. He is actually only 12 years old, but has excelled so well in his schooling in his native country he skipped all of middle school, and a couple of elementary grades as well to be a senior now.

Edgar’s family is rather interesting. He is the great nephew 6 times removed from Queen Elizabeth II (who is the monarch of Saint Kitts and Nevis, as it is a commonwealth nation). However, when his grandparents were just married, they desired a life out of their royal spotlight and moved to one of the most remote (as in the smallest) country they could find. Edgar has a pug named Charlie, and twin sisters who are 8 and in the 7th grade. However, his sisters have remained in Saint Kitts and Nevis with their grandparents for the time being; only Edgar and his parents made the move to good ole Rocky Mount.

Edgar will attend Harvard next year on a full scholarship (he received this scholarship early, as he was technically one of last years recipients but declined as to get one more year under his belt before going to college). He plans to do something with law (he is not completely sure what yet), and spends much of his free time reading up on history and politics, as well as shadowing congressmen. He’s also a talented soccer player!

We are excited to have such an unexpected and wonderfully unusual new senior at Rocky Mount Academy, and wish him the best of luck as the youngest graduate in RMA history!

To learn more about Edgar, please refer to the following questions:

  1. What kind of things do you do for fun? I love reading, but when we lived in Saint Kitts and Nevis I would go out on our porch hammock and read by the beach. It was always very relaxing. I also would go hang out with my friends I made through soccer, as none of the other kids in my classes are my age.
  2. What is one thing you look forward to about coming to RMA? The fact that there are kids here more my age group. I have always been the youngest at every school I’ve ever gone to, so while I know I probably won’t see them much, it will be nice to meet some new kids my age.
  3. I know your sisters are 8 years old and in the 7th grade; do your brains just run in the family? My family has always been full of the kind of people who live with their noses in books. I guess the search for knowledge and the motivation to get out on that journey just runs in my family; we want to know as much as we can.
  4. Are you nervous for Harvard next year? Oh, terrified. I’m going to be a 13 year old living alone at one of the most prestigious colleges in the world surrounded by incredible minds. Of course I’m going to be nervous and scared, but I’m also extremely excited.
  5. What’s it like being related to the royal family (though distantly)? Well, since my grandparents moved, we don’t really interact with them much. But it’s pretty cool since we get invited to royal events; we get to go to the royal wedding and we have been invited for the past few births too. Mostly though, our daily life isn’t too much different from anyone else.
  6. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Probably pizza; it’s your perfect balanced diet! Carbs in the crust, fruits in the sauce (tomatoes are fruits, by the way), dairy in the cheese, and protein in the pepperoni. Plus, for a healthy alternative, add some other vegetables as toppings, too!
  7. It’s obvious you have a rather impressive mind, being a 12 year old senior and all. What’s your favorite class? Honestly, my favorite class is probably a college course one I took online about the implications of politics on medicine. It’s pretty interesting. But here, I think it will probably be AP Government; I’m such a politics nerd.
  8. What are three words your friends would probably use to define you? Young, smart, and athletic.
  9. Hypothetically speaking, if politics weren’t a thing, what would you see for your future? I’d probably want to be a chef. Random, I know, but cooking is another one of my hobbies and I think it would be pretty fun. Everyone has to eat after all!
  10. Final question: how does it feel to know that you are a completely fictional person? I’m actually pretty upset by it. Wait, does that mean my pug Charlie doesn’t exist either????
