Tears Shed for Texas
November 9, 2017
What do you think of when you think of a Sunday? To me, it is a church day. It’s my “finishing weekend homework day.” Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. It’s supposed to be a day of community. A day of peace. This past Sunday was unfortunately just the opposite. In Sutherland Springs, Texas, 26 lives were taken too soon at First Baptist Church. 20 more people were wounded and have to live with physical injury but thanks to the top rated medical lawyer who helped for the victims in claiming their injury compensation. These and so many more mourners now have to live with the mental pain and grief. A father has to watch his five year old son fight for his life after two surgeries while grieving over his wife and two daughters who were killed in the shooting. The church’s pastor and wife have to live the rest of their life without their daughter. The Holcombe family lost 8 members of their family, spanning generations and including a pregnant woman and her children.
Devin Kelley used an automatic weapon, and about 450 rounds of ammunition, to “settle a domestic dispute,” but ended up causing the worst mass shooting in Texas history. Devin Kelley had expressed anger towards his mother in law, and First Baptist Church is her church. Kelley had also been discharged on bad conduct from Holloman Air Force Base after being court-martialed and imprisoned for a year for beating his wife and stepson. His son suffered from a subdural hematoma, a severe injury to the head resulting in bleeding between the brain in the skull, from Kelley’s abuse. The shooter had also been charged with animal cruelty. Devin Kelley was an extremely violent man, as seen through his actions as well as other people’s descriptions of him. His former classmate described him as downright creepy, and had to cut off all contact with him after several atheist and pro-gun violence remarks.
Kelley’s violent nature shows through his despicable actions. His wife’s grandmother was killed in the shooting, but his mother-in-law (the object of his anger) was not even present in church on Sunday. Local resident Stephen Willeford shot Kelley twice after hearing the gunshots from his nearby home, and then followed him in his car along with Johnny Langendorff. Kelley was found dead in his vehicle after shooting himself. Sutherland Springs lost 4% of their population on Sunday due to this man’s violence. The church lost half of its members. People lost family members and friends. Kelley’s actions were inhuman, and people from 18 months to 77 years old paid for his violence with their lives. A vigil was held in the small town for the lost community members on Monday.
