Spring Sports are in full swing and all our teams are entering the much anticipated first contests of the year. See below to see how each team is doing so far this season.
Varsity Baseball
Varsity Baseball is off to a good start, with a 3-1 record. They travelled to Cary Christian for their 1st game of the season on Thursday the 2nd for an easy 10-0 win. Senior Reid Johnston offensively led the team with two homeruns. Next, the boys faced Freedom Christian at home Tuesday the 7th. The team was victorious again with a 7-4 win. The Eagles dominated defensively with several good plays from the outfield and a great performance from Isaiah Thomas in the infield. Reid Johnston led with 4 RBIs, one being a triple. Reid also was the game winning pitcher, finishing out the game with 3 strike-outs. Thursday, the boys played their first game of the Faith Christian tournament against Parrott Academy. The Eagles were once again victorious, with a 9-1 win. The team started strong and held the lead the entire game. Saturday, in the next game of the Faith tournament, the Eagles fell short to Westchester Country Day School in a hard fought game to one of the best teams in the state. The baseball team has a promising future in front of them with great senior leadership and good chemistry on the field. Make sure to come check them out next week as they take on Faith Christian at home on Thursday the 16th.
Varsity Soccer
Our varsity girls’ soccer team started their week off in Fayetteville as they took on Freedom Christian this Tuesday. The girls secured their first win of the season defeating Freedom 4-1, bringing our team to a 1-1 record. The lady Eagles dominated offensively taking 19 shots on goal, but the goals were scored by freshmen Ada Everette and Deborah Kitchin with 2 goals each. Lillie Daughtridge, Barrett Eidson, and Haley McCall all had assists and Gabby Hickman, the team’s new goalkeeper, had 3 total saves including a PK. The girls also played in the Brittany showcase on Saturday the 11th in Wilson against the Durham School of the Arts. They came up short 4-0, but fought hard until the end, and Isabel Smith was awarded the sportsmanship award.
Varsity Softball
The varsity softball team had a tough start to the week, as they faced defending state champs Freedom Christian Tuesday at home. Although the lady Eagles did not get the results they hoped for, they kept their heads up and focused on the next game of the week, which was Friday at Village Christian. The girls won this game 11-10 in the last inning. In the top of the 7th, RMA was down 7-8 and knew it would be their last at bat. There was 2 outs and nobody was on base, but the lady Eagles were still fighting. Julia High kept the inning alive with a single to right field, Gabbi Stewart followed with a double, leaving Julia on 3rd, Gabbi on 2nd, and Casey Jones up to bat with 2 outs. Village decided to intentionally walk Casey, making the bases loaded and Ashley Wright up to bat. Ashley Wright stepped up with a huge hit, scoring 3 runs, giving the Eagles the lead. The Eagles went back into the field with Casey Jones on the mound. The girls were able to hold Village and secure the win. The girls now have a 2-1 record and are looking forward to playing St. David’s and Faith Christian next week.
Varsity Tennis
The varsity boys’ tennis team played their first match of the season on Friday the 10th at home against Village Christian. The team had a strong start to the season with an 8-1 win. Even though they were missing two key players in the lineup, the team dominated in both singles and doubles, resulting in J.V. players being pulled up for the match. This group of boys definitely has a positive season ahead of them with young talent and a deep lineup. The eagles will surely be a big threat in the conference.
Our varsity track and golf teams are both looking sharp and will compete for the first time this week.
