Swimming is all about Good Times!
Our Varsity Swim team is having one of their best seasons in years with strong boys’ and especially fast girls’. The team is larger than usual and comprised of experienced swimmers all the way to first year swimmers. As a result of strong senior leadership paired with experienced underclassmen, the eagles are dominating in meets. Also, the team is led by the dream team of coaches, Brian Winham and Margaret Godwin. Coach Winham has been coaching various teams for many years and recently took over the swim team. Margaret Godwin, fondly known as Magoo, is a swim coach at the YMCA who puts in countless hours creating work outs for practices, placing swimmers in events to make sure RMA has the best outcome possible and attending all meets, keeping everyone in line.
The girls team is in the running to be conference champs this season. As the regular season is coming to a close the eagles are looking at conference standings and the state meet. Our girls’ team is placed high in the conference in close competition with The Epiphany School of Global Studies. The girls welcomed two new swimmers to the team this year, Kayla Miller and Jillian Lavely, as these girls swim year round and have a lot of experience in the water, they have been a tremendous help to the team and the relays. Not only do they score in individual events, they encourage and motivate other team members to swim faster. They are also key players in the relays which are a real strength for the girls. They have several successful relay teams that have been excelling all season and that they expect to place very high in the state meet. At last Fridays meet all three of the girl’s relay placed first! Many swimmers have already qualified for the state meet in one or more areas. These swimmers include Stephen Tucker, Sharpe Newton, Thomas Newton, Kayla Miller, Jillian Lavely, Brandon Miller, Anna Scott Wingfield, Clara Lord, and Briana Wenham. As well as the team’s success this season they have great group of student athletes and a lot of fun together in and out of the pool. Sophomore Haven Ross said “my favorite part of the team is that we are really like a family. We have a team member from each grade, and we have all different personalities. We have grown really close over the season, through grueling practices, hectic meets, long bus rides, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts”.
