Winter Sports Update

Emily Cheston, Communications Chair

With fall sports officially ending, winter sports are just beginning. This year, Rocky Mount Academy has had great success in girls’ varsity tennis with a number four seed in the state and earning the title of Conference Champs. Varsity volleyball also had one of their best seasons and the Cross Country girls’ team ended with Conference Runner- Up  Student-athletes on the soccer and football teams worked diligently at practices and on game days. As the temperatures drop, the winter sports season is just heating up! Here is a sneak peek at what is to come in the next few months.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball: The varsity boys’ basketball team will be one to watch this year. With a mix of experienced upperclassmen and enthusiastic underclassmen, the dynamic of this team should be strong across the board. As always, Coach Scott Dunn will work to create a cooperative mentality between the athletes and lead them to success. Last week, the team won their first game against Rocky Mount Prep and seeks to maintain their momentum. When asked about the outlook for this year, Rob Turnage answered, “We’ve gone through a lot of adversity this year after losing five seniors and having numerous injuries, but this team has responded in a great way and I’m proud to be a part of it.” Be sure to come out and support this group as they push closer to their goal of having an outstanding season. Their next games take place at home today (11/15) and at Faith Christian School on Friday (11/18). There is sure to be a large crowd of fans in the stands cheering them on!

Varsity Girls’ Basketball: This athletic mix of girls is sure to be successful in their upcoming games. The group of nimble athletes is working hard to make their mark on the court this year. Julia High, Lindy Pittman, and Rachel Scott Dunn will be great leaders as they push the team to be the best they can be. With an athletically strong defense and smart offense, the team will give fans something to be proud of. When asked about her hopes for this season, Lindy Pittman stated, “I hope that the hard work we put in at practice really shows this year. We are a determined team and I know that the sky is the limit when we play to the best of our abilities!” Be sure to come out and cheer the Lady Eagles on as they play at home today (11/15) and at Faith Christian School on Friday (11/18). Go Eagles!

Varsity Swimming: This year’s swim team will be particularly strong. New students, Jillian Lavely (11), Kayla Miller (10), and Brandon Miller (7) will be great assets to the team as they swim year-round. Coach Brian Winham says he is especially looking forward to “improvement from the guy’s team and big things from the girls’ team.” Seniors Briana Winham, Anna Scott Wingfield, and Gracie Cox will lead the team both in and out of the pool with their experiences from previous years. When asked what her goal is for this year, Anna Scott said, “I would like to be able to compete on the state level this year individually. Our team has a great dynamic, but making it to states individually would be a great way to end my senior season. I am hopeful for this year and know we can all perform well if we put in the work!” It is said that the team has a significant change of making it to state competition and RMA will be supporting them every stroke of the way.
