Girls Varsity Tennis Run at States
October 25, 2016
eThe Girls Varsity Tennis Team is having a fantastic season. They finished undefeated in the CIC conference, making them conference champs as well as having a great record out of conference. They had several players named All – Conference including Julia High, Haven Ross, and Ann Sumner Thorp. Suzanna Mosley was also named All – Conference Honorable Mention and Julia High was named Conference Player of the Year along with All – State honors. With the terrific regular season, the team received a state bid as the 4th seed. The high seed resulted in a bye through the first round. The girls competed in the second round of the state tournament this past Friday against Caldwell Academy. Right when the match was about to start, the sky fell out and both teams anxiously waited for the rain to stop and get the opportunity to play. Due to our courts being covered with puddles, the match was moved to Benvenue Country Club. After all the waiting and moving, both teams were ready to play. Doubles was first and our lineup was Haven Ross and Julia High at number one, Suzanna Mosely and Ann Sumner Thorp at number two, and Rachel Scott Dunn and Lindy Pittman at number three. All three doubles courts won leaving us up 3-0. Ann Sumner and Suzanna had a particularly good match winning at a close call of 8-6. These girls definitely played some of their best doubles of the year. Singles was next and the line–up was Julia High, Haven Ross, Ann Sumner Thorp, Suzanna Mosley, Caroline Gay, and Shelton Honey. Shelton Honey and Julia High both won their singles matches giving us a 5-0 lead and concluding the match. The girls will play in the semi – finals Tuesday at St. Davids’, the number one seed . We are so very proud of their successful season in and out of conference. Wish them luck in the rest of the state tournament!
