Faculty Focus: Mrs. Willis
This week’s Faculty Focus features none other than Mrs. Barbara Willis. Mrs. Willis began her career at Rocky Mount Academy 14 years ago teaching kindergarten, where she taught many of this years seniors. Now she is teaching science, math, and social studies to 5th graders. Her impact on the RMA community reaches far past the classroom as she has been the heart and soul of the upper school plays for years, directing and organizing these fantastic productions. For more on our beloved Mrs. Willis check out the interview below!
What college did you attend?
I had a bit of wanderlust, so I attended several colleges – I started at the University of Kentucky, then went to San Diego State University, and completed my undergraduate work at the University of Washington. I completed the circle with my graduate degree back in Kentucky. Although it took longer than 4 years, it was a great way to see the country!
What are your hobbies outside of school?
When ever I have time off from school, I love to spend it immersed in a good book. I also love to travel, spend time with my family, do yoga, and listen to music.
What is a little known fact about you?
I started my teaching career working with deaf children. For many years, I aspired to teach at Gallaudet University, a private college for deaf and hard of hearing students.
What is your favorite type of music?
I love any and every kind of music (with the exception of country). I would have to say that my favorite is indie/alternative rock…… and Bruce Springsteen, of course.
What is your favorite thing about RMA?
I love the sense of trust and respect at the school, between everyone -students, faculty, and administration. It is a wonderful atmosphere in which to work!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I love everything about my job, but one of the most satisfying aspects of teaching is when the students become engaged about something they are learning, – the”ahhh, I get it!” moment.
What (or who) inspired your career choice?
I know it sounds like a cliche, but I did have that one teacher who influenced my life and my career choice- Mrs. White. She was so wonderful and encouraging that I knew from the ripe old age of 7, that I was meant to be in a classroom!
What is a pet peeve of yours?
Eeyore types – negative people who always see the cup half empty!
Can you describe your life before RMA?
Before I came to RMA, I was a stay at home mom, raising my three beautiful children.
