Winter Sports Wrap Up

Julia High, Marketing Chair

As the winter season comes to an end and spring sports practice starts, the Eagle Examiner will take a look at how each team performed this season.

Varsity Swim Team

The varsity swim team had yet another great season this year. The team was young with several new members and middle schoolers, but competed very competitively in and out of conference. New coaches brought many changes to the program including a tough practice schedule that helped lead to the team’s success. The team finished third in conference with Briana Winham and Stephan Ward receiving all – Conference Awards along with Stephen Tucker and Gracie Cox receiving all – Conference Honorable Mention. The team’s success continued on to states having 7 swimmers qualify to swim in the state meet in Greensboro. With only losing one senior and rising talent, the swim team looks to have a promising future.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The girls had a decent season this year, finishing 6th in conference. They faced a very challenging schedule having to compete against some of the top teams in the state. All things considered, the girls did a great job of fighting hard and competing to the best of their ability against every team they faced. The girls worked together well and made tremendous progress throughout the season playing each game better than the last. Leading scorer and senior Katie Gutshall was awarded All – Conference along with Senior Allison Barnes who was awarded All – Conference Honorable Mention.

Varsity Boys Basketball

To no surprise the Varsity Boys had another impressive season. The boys finished 1st in conference keeping an undefeated record the whole season. They then finished 2nd in the CIC conference tournament coming up short at the end with a tough loss against Crossroads in the conference tournament. Due to their phenomenal season, the team receive a state bid and competed against Gaston Day School Tuesday in the first round of the state tournament. Brendan Acker, A.J. Mitchell, and Elijah McCadden received all conference awards and Elijah was also awarded Conference player of the year. Coach Dunn was awarded CIC Coach of the year for the second consecutive year in a row. The team will definitely miss the seniors next year, but with several returning players the varsity boys will hopefully have another strong season.
