If RMA Were … She’s the Man
May 11, 2015
For those of you that have not the privilege to view the amazingly quotable film She’s the Man, I advise you to watch it as soon as possible. The plot of the movie follows Viola, a girl who just wants to prove that she’s good enough to play soccer with the boys. When Viola’s team gets cut from her school’s athletic budget and she’s not allowed to try out for the boys’ team, she temporarily takes on the identity of her rock star brother and packs her bags to join the male soccer team at Illyria, the rival of her old alma mater. Viola surrounds herself with an amusing group of friends and foes as she tries to keep up with this new world of competitive soccer and keep her secret identity under wraps. How does it all work out? Well you’ll have to watch the movie to find out.
This week we have chosen to highlight this classic teen film by casting the characters with select individuals from RMA’s senior class. Let’s get started:
- Viola: Ashley Bissette
While she may not have ever changed schools while pretending to be a boy, Ashley loves to play soccer. It is one of her favorite past times and she is certainly a force on the soccer field. If any girls’ varsity soccer play could make an easy transition to the boys’ team, it would – hands down – be Ashley.
- Duke: Brandon Griffin
Brandon Griffin is a self-proclaimed “ladies man” (middle school dances, anyone?). His charm can be matched with that of Duke played by none other than heartthrob Channing Tatum. Brandon has been making the ladies swoon since 1997 and will continue on for many years to come.
- Justin: John Miller
Justin is Viola’s recently dumped ex-boyfriend. Like RMA’s very own John Miller, Justin is a friendly and caring guy that is also quite athletic. He works throughout the movie to attempt to win Viola back.
- Olivia: Meg Deyton
There is not a more perfect person to play Olivia. Meg exemplifies all that Olivia stands for. She is classy, a star-student, and brightens any room. Meg was named “best all-around” by her fellow classmates this year and if She’s the Man were to have superlatives, Olivia would have been given the same one. However, Meg is not afraid of a fight; and we all know about the fight in the bathroom at the Debutante Luncheon between Monique, Viola, and Olivia.
- Toby: Colby Kirkpatrick
Let’s face it… Colby and Toby are basically the same person. Both are soccer players, have interesting senses of humor, and are just trying to get through high school. I’m pretty sure that Toby’s famous words of “Screw you guys. I hate high school” have even actually come out of Colby’s mouth this past year. And let’s not forget about good ole Eunice.
- Eunice: Anna Claire Thompson
While Colby thought that Anna Claire texted him too much in middle school (reference to Colby’s Senior Spotlight), there is no denying that these two had chemistry. I mean, after all, they were in a middle school relationship. This relationship can be equivalent to Toby and Eunice’s romance. Even though Anna Claire lacks the asthma and head gear that complete the character Eunice, there may be some underlying similarities between the two.
- Sebastian: Spencer Bulluck
Spencer is just a cool guy. He is very laid back and easy-going. Both of which are qualities that Sebastian, the brother of Viola, possesses. Spencer spends quite a bit of his time in the music room and it is no secret that Sebastian has a love for music as he goes all the way to London to pursue this hopeful career. While Sebastian lacks all aspects of athletic ability, Spencer is a very talented runner. This is where the two differ greatly.
- Monique: Nyla Green
She’s sassy, she’s fierce. Nyla Green is nothing shy of the character Monique. They both are very outspoken and outgoing. There was no other person that could even come close to exemplifying all that Monique stands more than Nyla Green herself.
- Malcom: Nick Womack-Gibson
Nick and Malcolm are one in the same. While Malcolm can be characterized as being overly creepy though his intentions are good, Nick is definitely not to this level. However, he did one time tell an unnamed senior that they “smelled like strawberries…”, a quote that easily could have come out of Malcom’s mouth.
