Varsity Boys Tennis Makes Case for State Tournament Bid
April 27, 2015
Within the past few weeks, RMA’s Boys Varsity Tennis team has had two tough wins, beating state powerhouses St. David’s 6-3 and Cary Christian 7-2.
RMA beat St. David’s 6-3, marking the first time RMA has ever beaten the Warriors in Boys Varsity Tennis. After a short break, RMA came back strong to beat Cary Christian 7-2, marking the first time RMA has ever beat Cary by more than a score of 5-4. St. David’s and Cary Christian, usual state championship contenders, both had to deal with RMA’s new line-up, after adding Freshman Trey Smelcer to the team this year. Since adding Smelcer to the team at 1 seed, it has allowed players to move around and play equal competition, causing RMA to be strong 1 6. When asked how the new line-up has fared thus far, Senior Colby Kirkpatrick replied, “With this new line-up, we have been able to match up more evenly with tough opponents and come out on top in key non-conference matches that could potentially help us get a bid to the state tournament.” Trey Smelcer is not the only new addition to the team, as RMA hired Elementary and Middle School guidance counselor Christian Love as the new coach. Her strong encouragement and positivity makes her a great addition to one of the strongest tennis teams RMA has had within the past decade.
RMA will find out about states in early May, but they are not overlooking their next few matches. Come out and support the Eagles on Wednesday as they celebrate senior night and prepare for their Conference Tournament!
