New Inductee: Caitlyn Vester Highlights a Worthy Cause

The Rocky Mount Academy Media Office is proud to introduce our readers to the newest addition to the program, Caitlyn Vester.  Applying last month to be a part of the Media Office for the 2015-2016 school year, Caitlyn was a stand-out candidate due to her creativity (evident in her other submitted article) and her community-based viewpoint. Check out her informative article below:

Odin’s Orphans Rescue is a non-profit volunteer based rescue serving the Nash   County area.  They save dogs from local shelters that are faced with health  difficulties and possible euthanasia and help them find fur-ever homes.  This organization works  in collaboration with Coat’s Veterinary Hospital to spay/neuter all dogs and supply them with other veterinary needs and medications.  However, food, medicine, and contemporary homes all cost money.  That is why Odin’s Orphans appreciates all donations, food or money, because it all goes towards loving animals in need!

Odin’s Orphans was named after one special rescue dog, Odin.  Odin’s Orphans founder, Shanna Floyd, rescued him after he had been in a car crash, shattering his facial features and causing him to become unattractive and thus unwanted by local shelters.  Shanna took Odin in and he immediately became a part of her family.  After a couple of surgeries Odin’s face was eventually fixed and he was once more beautiful.  But, if you look closely, one can tell that Odin’s nose is still slightly cricked, which only adds to his charm.

All dogs associated with Odin’s Orphans are kept at Shanna’s house.  She is currently  housing about 25 dogs, including both pets up for adoption and her own.  Some dogs, however, are located at Coats Vet because they need constant attention from the doctors.  Recently, a puppy was brought in whose leg had been run over.  After a complex surgery on February 11th, it sadly had to be amputated.  Dogs like Degas are very costly to be rescued, but Odin’s Orphans does it anyway.

In order to raise money, Odin’s Orphans  hosted a communal yard sale on March 7th.   People dropped off donated items to be sold at the yard sale to Coats Vet.  This yard sale was a huge success due to many volunteers and donors.  It profited the rescue with approximately $1300.  In addition, thirty-one presented a fundraiser to help Odin’s Orphans rescue more dogs from the shelter.  A bag was made with a paw print on the front, being sold for $31.  Odin’s Orphans received 25% of all sales from this event.  Currently, Odin’s Orphans is selling T-shirts for $20 to help spread the word.  The logo of Odin is located on the front of the shirt with quote “Until They All Have A Home” on the back.  To order these shirts, simply go and like Odin’s Orphans page on Facebook.  They have the link posted about the shirts.

Among the many dogs up for adoption, here are a highlighted few: Jango, a one year old cattle mix, Jade and Argos, all pit bull mixes, and of course Degas, the three legged puppy.

For this dog rescue to be made possible, people of the community need to help out and support Odin’s Orphans.  Fostering, donating, volunteering, and even adopting are perfect ways to show you care! Come out and see some of Odin’s friends at Coats Vet!
