The subject of this issue of Senior Spotlight is none other than the ambitious Spencer Thorne. Ask anybody at Rocky Mount Academy, and they will tell you he is best known for setting big goals and consistently working hard to achieve them.
RMA has been fortunate enough to have had Spencer here since Kindergarten as part of a Thorne family tradition: just last year, his sister, Greyson Thorne, graduated from RMA, while Spencer’s dad, Trey Thorne, graduated from the school in 1996 and now serves on the Board of Trustees.
Throughout his long tenure at Rocky Mount Academy, Spencer has always put forth his best effort, as you can see from his senior schedule: Honors French IV, Honors Calculus, AP Statistics, and an Economics course at Nash Community to earn college credit. Although Spencer says his favorite subject in school is math since it is his biggest strength, he is also talented in English. After earning awards for Excellence in Advanced English 9 and 11, Spencer is now enrolled in Honors English 12; he is always striving to improve and challenge himself!
Spencer also excels as a dedicated and accomplished athlete who has positively impacted Eagle athletics. He picked up soccer his junior year and also played JV and varsity basketball as a guard but is best known on campus for his skill as a golfer. He was awarded both All-Conference and MVP honors his sophomore, junior, and senior years for his outstanding performance as he worked his way up to the number-one seed on the varsity team. In 2024 and 2025, with Spencer’s help, the RMA golf team won the CIC Conference Championship. He even earned his team its highest score in 2025, with a 68 on a par-71 layout. His record is a true testament to both his skill and his dedication; Spencer is a standout athlete and sets a standard that is incredibly hard to match.
Both in and outside of school, Spencer gives back to the community through his extracurriculars. Here at RMA, he is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, and Stronger Together; all work outside the classroom to help others. During his summers off from school, Spencer volunteers at the Hope Camp–a program that provides enrichment to children with special needs–one Saturday a month, which is an extension of what he does at school by serving as an Exceptional Children’s Program intern. Other school activities include the National Honor Society and the Global Studies Honors Program. Despite having so much on his plate, Spencer also has his own clothing company called Dockside Doggy, which sells shirts and sweatshirts online. These many extracurricular activities make Spencer extremely well-rounded while also demonstrating his love for helping others, commitment to academic excellence, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Before we know it, Spencer will be off to college, though he doesn’t know yet where that will be. He has many great options, though, as he is planning to apply to UNC, NC State, ECU, UNC-Wilmington, the University of Georgia, Auburn, and the University of South Carolina. No matter which school he goes to, he plans to rush a fraternity and major in business. From there, following in his father’s footsteps, he will join the residential real estate industry. Spencer, we wish you luck and will miss your many contributions to RMA!
