Joining us his sophomore year, Terrence Pittman has shared his enthusiastic personality with RMA since being named a finalist for the Ann Weaver Scholarship in 2022. While here, he has received other awards such as the Robert Joshua Weaver Scholarship (established in honor of second-grade teacher Ms. Weaver’s son) and the Turner W. Battle Memorial Scholarship, but his most important achievement has been just becoming part of the RMA family!

Terrence is finishing out his RMA career strong by taking Honors Calculus, English 12 Honors, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, and French 2 Honors. Supplementing his work in the classroom, Terrence has been deeply involved with the Exceptional Children’s Program, offering his time to the Special Olympics, EC Proms (he was this year’s MC!), and Stronger Together Club. He especially enjoys being in Stronger Together because “you get to interact with the kids in different ways and make new friendships while also helping the teachers out.” He also participates in other clubs like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Senior Beta Club, and Key Club, where he says he enjoys the bake sales that let him volunteer with his friends for a good cause.

While he is incredibly devoted to RMA activities, Terrence is also very active in his church’s youth ministry. He is on the youth choir team (he started when he was just 5!) and is a member of the student leadership team, which plans student events at church. For instance, Terrence has organized church lock-ins and summer camps, as well as planned a student tutoring program where he and other older students tutored elementary-aged students who needed to improve in school. Taking on even more of a leadership role, he leads praise and worship every fourth Sunday.
Outside of academics and clubs, Terrence stays busy with sports. His freshman year (at Northern Nash), he played varsity tennis and JV basketball. Once he moved to RMA his sophomore year, he continued his basketball career by joining the varsity team and also played tennis until swapping out tennis for golf as a senior. He especially enjoys playing golf–even in his free time–and you can often find him at Benvenue Country Club, where he works in the golf shop!

Continuing his academic career, Terrence will be attending Elon University in the fall and majoring in political science on a pre-law track. He also applied to NC State, Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, and Campbell, but Elon stuck out as his favorite–especially when he received the Elon Presidential Scholarship, which is for students who maintain a GPA of 3.5 and higher and show dedication to both academics and community service. This scholarship will allow Terrence to connect with other students that he shares interests with and even to study abroad at some point. While he has many passions, Terrence hopes to become an attorney and, in the long term, become a judge or political analyst, so you just might see him on a future episode of Meet the Press!
