One of our five senior spotlights this week is on RMA “lifer” Thomas Honey, who started Pre-K here at the age of three. If he were to describe himself in a few words, they would be smart, athletic, funny, and kind.
Smart. Thomas has challenged himself this year by taking French 4, AP Calculus, AP English, AP Psychology, and AP Biology–so basically the highest-level classes RMA offers! Thomas had also earned academic excellence in French I, II, and III.
Athletic. In addition to being dedicated to his classes, Thomas is committed to being a great athlete! Throughout his time at RMA, he has played tennis, soccer, and basketball. Thomas started playing basketball in the seventh grade, winning All-Tournament honors. In his eighth-grade year, he was again successful and won MVP for his work as point guard. In high school, Thomas was on the All-Tournament team in 10th grade and won MVP playing Power Forward on JV. On the varsity team his junior year, Thomas won the starting spot as point guard, and as a senior, he led the team in total assists with 110 for the season! Showing his versatility as an athlete, Thomas is also a soccer player. He played striker his freshman and sophomore years and then played defense his junior year, which let him win All-Conference and MVP Honors. Although he is clearly successful in other sports, most of RMA thinks of Thomas as a tennis player. He has played tennis since the sixth grade, and he played varsity tennis as an eighth grader, which is rare! In eighth and ninth grades, he won All-Conference (as the 4th and 3rd seed), and his team took home the state championship both years. In tenth grade, in addition to once again being named All-Conference, Thomas won All-State and the Coach’s Award. His junior year, he won All-Conference, Player of the Year, MVP, and All-State. Due to it being tennis season now, there are no awards, but expect Thomas to continue to excel on the tennis court

Kind. Supplementing his studies and athletics, Thomas is involved in a handful of extracurriculars, participating in Beta Club, Key Club, Stronger Together, the National Honor Society (he served as a graduation marshal his junior year), the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Global Studies Honors Program. One thing that all of these clubs have in common is that they are service-based organizations that take on community service projects. Thomas says his favorite project is helping with the summer camp that Mrs Whitehead has, which is sports-related.
Thomas also stays busy outside of school. He works at Benvenue Country Club as a cart boy and babysits for families in the area.
Thomas plans to attend North Carolina State University and major in Exercise & Sports Science, possibly becoming a physical therapist. With such a strong background in sports and a kind heart that makes others immediately comfortable around him, this career would be a great fit for Thomas.
