One of our three Senior Spotlights this week is on Sammy Bowles, an “almost-lifer” who has been here since first grade. When asked to describe himself in a few words, Sammy responded in his typical witty fashion with, “friendly, kind-hearted, humorous, and male.” He is most definitely humorous, and he is also the first person to make great friends out of a room full of strangers. I had driver’s ed with Sammy for a week between eighth and ninth grades, and he brought lightheartedness to the class, making the rest of us laugh over at least one thing each day.
As a student at RMA, Sammy has done extremely well, achieving honors such as A Honor Roll in grades 9, 10, and 11, and serving as an Academic Marshal as a junior. He has plenty more achievements, but I won’t drone on about how great of a student he is; those who know him know he will gladly, but humbly, tell you himself in a comical manner. Still on track to make the honor roll, Sammy is again setting the bar high for himself his senior year by taking AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP English, and AP Calculus for his core classes and is rounding out his schedule with Ceramics and Sports Management for his electives.
He is also active in many clubs, serving as Treasurer for Key Club and Beta Club, a marshal for National Honor Society, and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After school hours, Sammy has played varsity boys’ tennis since the seventh grade and has played at just about every seed, progressing with each year. He also received the coach’s award and all-conference honors during his time as an Eagle athlete. Off of the tennis courts, Sammy “dabbles,” as he says, in the occasional golf match and is sure to watch the Masters each year.
To further his academic career, Sammy has applied to ECU, NC State, and Chapel Hill. So far, he has been accepted into ECU and will soon hear back from the other schools. He really sees himself attending the ECU Honors program and majoring in Construction Management, so we hope that vision becomes a reality. After graduation, Sammy wants to be a contractor, building houses and docks on Lake Gaston or in the Littleton area, where he can spend his free time fishing.
