The word “Homecoming” may be synonymous with football, but at RMA, Homecoming is so much more! Here are a few highlights from Homecoming 2023.
On Wednesday, September 30, the Upper School Student Government Association hosted a fan-favorite event: the annual powderpuff football game. This year, the freshman/sophomore team took down the junior/senior team with a score of 14 to 6. Sophomores McKenna Rogers and Millar Berry were unstoppable running the ball for the freshman/sophomore team, while junior Isabella Daza and senior Jessica Proctor led the seniors and juniors. Although the senior/junior team didn’t end up on top, it was still a fun night for everyone to watch and support the SGA, which raised over $200 for the lower school courtyard.
The next big Homecoming week event was the pep rally, where there were games and the presentation of the Homecoming Court, including the crowning of this year’s King and Queen. The pep rally, which started Friday (Sept. 22) at 2 pm, began with the presentation of the fall sports teams, followed by the homecoming court.
Two couples from grades 9-11, and three from the senior class, were voted on by their respective grades to represent them at the pep rally.
All of high school was able to vote for Homecoming King and Queen, so anticipation was high in the gym as students waited for the big announcement. After the couples were presented with their little buddies, senior Cooper Epps was crowned the 2023 Homecoming King. The girls from each class were then presented with their fathers–something that is usually done at the football game, but the threat of Hurricane Ophelia postponed Friday night’s game, so the crowning of the queen was moved to the pep rally. With her buddies Lauren and Chandler by her side, Avery Cumpata was crowned the 2023 Homecoming Queen.
The postponed football game was rescheduled for Monday, September 25… and it was worth the wait! The Eagles faced St. David’s School and completely destroyed them with a final score of 62 to 19. With touchdowns on all eight offensive drives, the boys were unstoppable, averaging 20.3 yards per carry. Seniors Jordan Wright, Marti McKnight, Cooper Epps, and Ben Pitt, as well as junior Cam Dawkins, all contributed touchdowns. Sophomore Gehrig Miller, quarterback, also had a great game, completing five of eight attempts for 90 yards. It was a Homecoming game not to miss!
