Although Friday night football games are a staple of high school sports, RMA’s varsity boys soccer team is an important part of RMA athletics this year with its 16 players. (For perspective, the football team has just five more.) Currently going 4-3 for the season (4-1 in conference play), the boys are proving to be tough competition, already showing improvement from last season (7-11) that they’re sure to keep building on.
This season, varsity soccer has four seniors leading the team. Parker Eatmon (#12)–who is playing soccer for the first time this year as right-wing–joins returning players Owen Smith (#13), Eduardo Ruthes (#7) on defense, and Ben Taylor (#1) mainly in right midfield. Making up a quarter of the team, these seniors are valuable players in their own right and also our team leaders… though the boys have had lots of help from freshman Mitchell Hinson in the goal, totaling up 50 saves for the season so far–that’s more than 7 saves per game!
Varsity soccer has already faced our biggest rivals at Faith Christian once this season (on 9/8), winning with a score of 5-3, and will face Faith again on 10/5 at Faith. (Be sure to attend since the team always appreciates some support at these tough away matches!) With four more home games–9/21 vs. Oakwood, 9/26 vs. Harrells, 10/10 vs. Grace Christian, and 10/12 vs. Thales–and five more away, they are looking to end their season on a high note. Seniors Eduardo Ruthes and Ben Taylor both agree that their “most anticipated game is against Fayetteville because we have to beat them to have a chance to win the conference,” so be sure to show support for our seniors there and on October 10 at 5:30 as they play Grace Christian School for Senior Night!
