It is that exciting time of year when students and parents gather on Friday nights to watch varsity football! Here is what you need to know about Eagles football to help you get the most out of this season.
First up, we have our talented players. Many players are returning, including six seniors: Jordan Wright (#5), our linebacker and halfback; Isaac Calhoun (#6)on the offensive and defensive line; Cooper Epps (#7), a wide receiver and defensive back; Ben Pitt (#8),a tight end and outside linebacker; Marti Mcknight (#9), the wide receiver, running back, and linebacker; and lastly, Parker Sherrod (#44), who plays tackle, defensive end, and long snapper. There are 10 returning players who will show our 5 new players how it’s done. Jordan Wright says he is looking forward to the chance “to teach the younger guys” this season, and we know he’ll do a great job guiding new players like Carter Smith, a freshman, who is excited to “get better, play, and work out.” Keep an eye out for Gehrig Miller (#3) as he takes action as the new quarterback.
The team has already had a challenging schedule starting with Brunswick Academy as their first game and then Halifax as their second. The Eagles took a devastating loss against Brunswick with a score of 61-20, partly they outsize us with 26 players who are all big and bulky. The Eagles faced another loss to Halifax with a score of 21-14. The team will try to redeem itself when we play Arendell Parrott Academy, Faith Christian School, Cary Christian, and many others later on.
Because football is just as much fun to watch as it is to play, the school has put a lot of thought into the spectator experience, coming up with fun themes. A few for this year are Hawaiian Night, White Out Night, and Neon Night, and I’m sure we’ll come up with many more awesome ideas! The student section always shows up with their best outfits and props to match the theme. Gabbi Ams, a senior, is looking forward “to see[ing] how hype the student section will be.”
Games and the student section are only a portion of why football means so much to our athletes. The players see their teammates as a family. Micah Boseman says, “My favorite thing about being on the team is the amount of time I get to spend with my teammates… we are all very close.”
Come support our Eagles at their next game–Friday, September 1 at 7:00 p.m. (notice the new date!)–against Fayetteville’s Berean Baptist Academy. Make sure to wear camo to match that night’s theme!
