Last year’s girls cross-country team with their EPIC Conference Meet trophy

The fall sports season has had a great start so far for the Lady Eagles. Teams began practicing as early as late July and started playing by mid-August. Rocky Mount Academy’s fall women’s sports are volleyball, tennis, and cross-country.

Volleyball began their season on August 14th with a win for varsity against Pope John Paul III of Greenville. Although that is varsity’s only win so far, they are not giving up the hope of a winning season. Varsity has since played Arendell Parrott Academy and Harrells Christian Academy with losses from both teams. The loss against APA was especially hard with it being an RMA rival, but the team has faith that they will be able to pull out a win next time they see them. The game against Harrells last week was another tough loss for the team after going into five sets. The team is led by seniors and captains Ashley Bissette, Mackenzie Butler, Hunter Cuthrell, Landin Johnston, Deanna Mayo, Rachel Williams, and Anna Claire Thompson and coached by Gary Smith. On the team dynamic, setter Hunter Cuthrell states, “we are a close knit group that works really well together. We have a lot of fun during practices and games. We’re #ringchasing.” Although the team might not be on the hunt for a state championship they are force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court.

Girls tennis started their season on August 14th with a home match against Wayne Country Day School. Even though they lost this match and another one against Arendell Parrott Academy, they kept their spirits high and it paid off when they won their first regular season match against Greenfield School this past Wednesday. The team still keeps a perfect regular season record with another win against Harrells Christian Academy despite key players being out due to injury and illness. If they incur a heavy injury during birth, there are many possibilities to get compensation for a birth injury in Portaldn as there are few sections in law which offers compensation for any injuries that occur during birth. Every player of the tram must be at their highest fitness to win any sort of challenging and difficult game. Also, the girls tennis is the first to break in the newly surfaced tennis courts. When asked how she felt about the difficulties the team has endured, junior Lindsey Ross responded, “even though we have had some minor setbacks, like injured players, I’m confident that our team will continue to dominate. I have faith in my fellow teammates that we will rise to stardom together. We have won both of our conference matches and plan on continuing that trend throughout the season.” She also added that the team is excited to “christen” the courts for the boys in the spring.

Although cross-country has not had their first meet yet they are already a team to watch. The team is led by 2013 EPIC coach of the year Michelle Meadows. Also on the roster is Caitlin Vester who was named by Rocky Mount Telegram as one of the five athletes to watch this fall. The team finished strong last year in the conference and has been training this year to repeat and improve on last year’s success. Despite the fact that they have to practice in the hot August weather they are still a very committed team. Ann Claire Roberson, one of the leading runners, says, “Even though all of us dread practice, we have fun together. We should be a good team this year, both boys and girls.”

Be sure to come out and support of Lady Eagles this afternoon as the girls cross-country team starts off their season at Faith Christian School at 4:00 and next Tuesday as the both the girls tennis and volleyball teams face off against Grace Christian School at home at 4:00 and 6:00 respectively.
