Last Wednesday, January 21st, Rocky Mount Academy’s Varsity Boys basketball team crushed Halifax Academy in an important conference game, ending 61-37. The Eagles, poised first in the Carolina Independent Conference, lived up to their ranking yet again and remained strong against the Vikings throughout the entire game, dominating the scoreboard after each quarter.

The starting five consisted of senior Zach Fulcher, juniors Kyle Holland and Brendan Acker, sophomore AJ Mitchell, and freshman Elijah McCadden. They guided the team to a quick lead just minutes into the game. Elijah McCadden stole the ball from the Vikings early on which sent the crowd into a frenzy. With this momentum, AJ Mitchell followed with a perfect three-pointer, which helped secure this early advantage for the Eagles

Along with their impressive offensive skills, the Eagles’ defense throughout the game proved to be the game-changing factor. At just the end of the first quarter, the Eagles had only allowed 9 points, while scoring a total of 21. Everything the Vikings did, RMA was able to combat and use to its advantage. Rod White, Jack Thorp, Rob Turnage, AJ Mitchell, and Elijah McCadden started for the Eagles in the second quarter. After several minutes of play, McCadden went up for a dunk, and the crowd, along with his teammates, went wild! The entire team continued to display tremendous skill and allowed only three points in the second quarter. The Eagles were feeling confident in their team as the score was 33-12 going into halftime.

The Eagles continued to dominate into the third and fourth quarter, as well. Overall, the team was led by AJ Mitchell with fourteen points, followed by Elijah McCadden with thirteen. Zach Fulcher contributed eleven points, Rob Turnage added nine, and Rod White and Jack Thorpe chipped in seven points each. To say the least, the Eagles played an extremely impressive game, showcasing the skills that have led them to the top of the conference this season.

Be sure to come out to RMA this coming Friday the 30th and celebrate Senior Night for our winter sports seniors, as well as cheer on the JV and varsity teams as they face cross-town rival, Faith Christian School!
