College Football off to a Strong Start

College Football off to a Strong Start

What a start to college football! Wake won, UNC won, ECU won, and most importantly Duke lost. This past weekend was filled with great games. The Heisman trophy is up in the air, but many players are showing out early to get their statistics up. Deshaun Watson (Clemson QB) has had some very impressive games. Houston’s quarterback Greg Ward Jr. is being predicted as a very likely candidate for this year’s Heisman. He has also been cleared from a recent injury to play the next game. If the injury had been season ending he wouldn’t have a shot at the Heisman. If Nick Chubb, Georgia’s RB, can pick up some more running yards than he has been, he also has a very good chance to win it.

The State of North Carolina has had some great football games thus far. ECU and NCSU had a phenomenal game, but the Pirates ended up being victorious over the Wolfpack, 33-30. ECU’s Anthony Scott ran the ball 5 yards into the end zone, to close the deal for the Pirates. Phillip Nelson truly won the game though, going 33 of 43 passes. UNC obliterated Illinois, winning 28-23. The heels are looking very strong for this season. Mitch Trubisky scored 4 touchdowns for the heels. The Tarheels had 426 total offensive yards, however the defense was spectacular as well. Andre Smith had the game of his life, with 14 total tackles. The Demon Deacons had a very good game against the Blue Devils. Cade Carney, a true freshman, had 108 rushing yards against Duke. His 3 touchdowns were key to WFU’s win on Saturday. Overall for North Carolina, it was a weekend packed with exciting football.

On the National level, there was a large number of blowout games. FSU beat CSU by 44 points. The Trojans beat Utah State 45-7. Notre Dame defeated Nevada 39-10. The list goes on and on. UGA had a tough time winning to Nicholls state. Rolando Ollie, who was featured in a Netflix original called Last Chance U, gave the Dawg’s offensive a run for their money. This is Ollie’s first season at Nicholls State and he is already starting off on the right foot. If he keeps it up, Ronald Ollie could be a force to be reckoned with. The games were not terribly interesting this past weekend but there should be some good ones in the future.

Week 4 in college football is sure to be a good one! The Crimson Tide will play the Rebels on Saturday at 12:30 in Ole Misses Vaught-Hemingway stadium. This is sure to be a competitive game, with last year’s game leaving a lot of emotions on and off the field. UNC will be facing JMU, however I think that the Tarheels will overcome the Dukes at home. Ohio State will travel to Oklahoma to play the Sooners. That will be one no one will want to miss. ECU is playing the Gamecocks in Columbia. If the Pirates can play as well as they did Saturday, then they have a shot to win. These next weeks will have a lot of competitive games. Teams will begin to pull away with winning streaks and players are going to really attempt to perform for the Heisman.

Take our poll to see who RMA’s favorite college football team is. The choices are ECU, NCSU, UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest.
